Rigging the Vote - Voter Suppression

One of my sources died in a plane crash last night…  12/20/2008 AtLargely: "Mike Connell set-up the alternate email and communications system for the White House. He was responsible for creating the system that hosted the infamous GWB43.com accounts that Karl Rove and others used. When asked by Congress to provide these emails, the White House said that they were destroyed. But in reality, what Connell is alleged to have done is move these files to other servers after having allegedly scrubbed the files from all "known" Karl Rove accounts. In addition, I have reason to believe that the alternate accounts were used to communicate with US Attorneys involved in political prosecutions, like that of Don Siegelman. This is what I have been working on to prove for over a year. In fact, it was through following the Siegelman-Rove trail that I found evidence leading to Connell. That is how I became aware of him. Mike was getting ready to talk. He was frightened. He has flown his private plane for years without incident."

Diebold Vote Company Whistleblower and GOP Cyber Security Expert: 2002 Chambliss Senate Race Was Rigged  12/1/2008 Market Watch: "Stephen Spoonamore, a cyber security expert and lifelong Republican, has also stated that he believes that the 2002 Georgia Senate race was rigged in favor of Chambliss. "If you look at the case of Saxby Chambliss, that's ridiculous. The man was not elected. He lost that election by five points. Max Cleland won. They flipped the votes, clear as day." Spoon said in another exclusive interview posted on YouTube by VR at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzKbigGoMoo."

Dysfunctional Election Process Needs to Be Repaired  11/12/2008 Common Dreams: "On the actual Election Day, in a twist worthy of Orwell, Robbins had to take his own advice. When the politically active actor showed up at the New York City polling place where he has been casting ballots for more than a decade, he was told that his name was not on the list of registered voters. So he refused to leave his polling place in Greenwich Village, even after an election worker suggested that the police might have to be called. Finally informed that he could go downtown to the office of the city's Board of Elections, Robbins made the trek, got verification that he was properly registered, got a judge to rule that he would be allowed to vote, and headed back to his polling place to finally vote five hours after his Election Day ordeal began."

Minnesota Ripe for Election Fraud  11/10/2008 Fox News: "Minnesota is becoming to 2008 politics what Florida was in 2000 or Washington State in 2004 -- a real mess. The outcome will determine whether Democrats get 58 members of the U.S. Senate, giving them an effective filibuster-proof vote on many issues."

No joke: Minnesota race is soooo ugly …  11/10/2008 Politico: "Republicans are also questioning the credibility of Minnesota’s Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, the man tasked with overseeing the recount. A background document distributed by national Republicans portrays Ritchie as a far-left, Democratic version of Katherine Harris, the former Republican secretary of state whose actions helped decide the 2000 presidential election. The document accuses Ritchie, who was elected in 2006 with the assistance of a progressive-led group designed to elected Democratic election administrators, of having connections to the controversial voter registration group ACORN and the Communist Party of America."

Georgia Can't Say How Many Eligible Voters It's Currently Disenfranchising  11/10/2008 TPM Muckraker: "A spokesman for the office insisted to TPMmuckraker that most of the voters originally identified through the state's system for finding non-citizens had self-identified as being such. But voting-rights groups argue that that system -- which checks registrations against state drivers records -- is flawed, and could lead to be eligible voters being included through data entry errors and other administrative errors. Handel's office couldn't yet say how many mistakes had been made, though the spokesman added that the information would soon become available as information from individual counties came in. In other words, the office can't say how many eligible voters cast ballots that are now being thrown out."

Even After Obama Victory, Hard Lessons from the ACORN Smear Campaign  11/7/2008 Alternet

Most Minn. Senate 'Undervotes' Are From Obama Turf  11/7/2008 AP: "About 25,000 ballots statewide carried votes for president but not for the Senate race. Although some voters might have intentionally bypassed the race, others might have mismarked their ballot, or optical scanning machines might have misread them. A recount due to begin Nov. 19 will use manual inspection to detect such ballots. Meanwhile, Coleman is using the state's open records law to ask Minnesota and all 87 counties for access to voting data and other records, questioning gains Franken has made since Election Day. Coleman campaign manager Cullen Sheehan complained of ''statistically dubious and improbable shifts that are overwhelmingly accruing to the benefit of Al Franken.''

Experts confounded: Turnout higher in Ohio in 2004  11/7/2008 Columbus Dispatch: "Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner is reporting 67 percent turnout, compared with 72 percent in 2004. She had been predicting 80 percent turnout this time. The percentage could increase as provisional ballots, overseas ballots and other outstanding votes are included during the official canvass in the coming weeks. But overall turnout still is expected to be lower than in 2004, leaving experts at a loss to explain it -- especially because the number of registered voters increased by 319,000 from four years ago… Another interesting result is that the counties with the largest increase in turnout from four years ago -- Butler, Delaware and Warren -- are solid Republican or GOP-leaning counties. And the counties with the largest declines -- Cuyahoga, Montgomery and Stark -- are more Democratic areas. Obama garnered more total votes than Kerry did in those three Republican counties. And even though his margin of victory in many Democratic counties was larger than Kerry's, the president-elect's total vote still was lower in those counties."

Observers sense 'something fishy' in Alaska vote  11/7/2008 Raw Story

STOLEN ELECTION IN ALASKA?  11/7/2008 Shannyn Moore: "Four years ago, 313,592 out of 474,740 registered voters in Alaska participated in the election-a 66% turnout. Taking into account 49,000 outstanding ballots, on Tuesday 272,633 out of 495,731 registered Alaskans showed up at the polls; a turnout of 54.9%. That’s a decrease of more than 11% in voter turnout even though passions ran high for and against Barack Obama, as well as for and against Sarah Palin! This year, early voters set a new record. As of last Thursday, with 4 days left to vote early, 15,000 Alaskans showed up-shattering the old record set in 2004 by 28%! Consider the most popular governor in history-and now the most polarizing-was on the Republican ticket. Consider the historic nature of this race; the first African American presidential candidate EVER! The second woman to ever make a presidential ticket; and she’s one of our own. Despite that, we’re supposed to believe that overall participation DECREASED by 11%. Not only that, but this historic election both nationally and for Alaska HAD THE LOWEST ALASKA TURNOUT FOR A PRESIDENTIAL RACE EVER!!! That makes sense. REALLY??? Something stinks."

Push to Expand Voter Rolls and Early Balloting in U.S.  11/6/2008 NYT: "There is also increasing support for broadly expanding voter registration rolls, possibly by having the federal government require the states to make registration automatic for all eligible voters. Supporters say universal registration could reduce registration fraud and the confusion at the polls that results when voters are purged from the rolls. Such a plan would be costly and technologically difficult, and it could run into resistance from Republicans who have been wary of expanding registration, citing concerns about ineligible voters being added to the rolls. Some state officials say they would prefer to set registration standards themselves. But independent experts say easier registration and voting methods would ensure that huge crowds like those on Tuesday turn out without being discouraged by the long delays experienced in many states. “The single most important thing that Congress can do right now is create universal voter registration, which would mean that all eligible voters are automatically registered,” said Rosemary E. Rodriguez, the chairwoman of the federal Election Assistance Commission, which oversees voting. “We also saw incredible success with early voting, and requiring states to adopt it would help as well.” Ms. Rodriguez said universal registration would reduce the dependence on third-party groups like Acorn to sign up people and would remove the impetus for much of the pre-election litigation over who should be allowed to register."

GOP Officials Trying To Disqualify Iowa Student Ballots  11/4/2008 Huffington Post: "The Iowa GOP appears to be distancing itself from a Monday effort to challenge thousands of student ballots at Grinnell College. Spokesman Nathan Treloar told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that while he has "seen reports coming out that its Republican lawyers" objecting to student ballots, he claimed "this could be a local thing" at the county level."

Sheehan Campaign Volunteers Harassed at San Francisco Polling Sites  11/4/2008 Market Watch: "Although several supporters for John Avalos, a candidate for District 11 Supervisor, were campaigning at the same location, witnesses at the scene confirmed that shortly after the polls opened at 7:00am poll workers told Sheehan's supporters that if they didn't move they would be arrested. Poll workers called the police sometime before 8:30am and officers arrived on the scene by 9:00am. "This is just the latest in a long series of very suspicious events during this campaign," says Cindy Sheehan. "Our offices have been repeatedly vandalized, computers with campaign information have been stolen, our volunteers have been attacked, and now we're being prohibited from exercising our constitutional right to free speech -- on an election day no less. This is not how democracy is supposed to work. And that's exactly why I'm running for Congress." "

Delaware County Democrats claim intimidation at some polls  11/4/2008 Philly.com: "The Republican are acting like it's an official check in sheet," said Democratic strategist Tom Hickey. "You walk up and they say 'What's your name?' But it's not an official place." Hickey said officers from the Delaware County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to three sites in Ridley Township to dismantle tables. The sheriff's department did not answer calls requesting confirmation and comment."

Attempted Sabotage Foiled in Florida!  11/4/2008 TMZ: "Election monitors noticed a man in line who appeared to be a voter. Turns out he was a saboteur, telling people the Democrats were supposed to vote at a different location. Some of the voters said they were robocalled last night. The message -- Democrats weren't supposed to vote until Wednesday."

Obama Campaign Observer Manual For Ohio Leaked To Velvet Revolution  11/4/2008 TPM Muckraker: "The manual is 53 pages long. The information contained therein is quite detailed, and is an indication that the campaign has a reasonably good understanding of the threats to election security posed by electronic voting machines, the vital importance of security procedures for the machines and the chain-of-custody for paper ballots, why provisional ballots should be given to a voter only as an absolute last resort, and the importance of post-election procedures for the voting machines and the ballots, both used and unused."

Milwaukee Puts a Vote-Fraud Cop Out of Business  11/4/2008 WSJ: "Last week Mike Sandvick, head of the Milwaukee Police Department's five-man Special Investigative Unit, was told by superiors not to send anyone to polling places on Election Day. He was also told his unit -- which wrote the book on how fraud could subvert the vote in his hometown -- would be disbanded."

Here's What Vote Fraud Really Looks Like  11/3/2008 Alternet: "Extensive national media coverage of alleged voter registration fraud by ACORN has fanned fears of "voter fraud" by Democratic forces. Given this fact, it's more than a little remarkable that the media has not seen fit to present more balanced coverage. The media could easily do so by reporting, at the same level as ACORN, the far more serious, documented and provable story of election fraud by Young Political Majors, LLC (YPM). YPM's owner Mark Jacoby was recently arrested in California on two felony counts of voter registration fraud and two counts of perjury, as reported in the LA Times October 20. But these 4 charges are the tip of the YPM iceberg."

Obama/DNC Incident Report Database Reveals Startling, Wide-Spread Voting Machine Problems Across Nevada During Early Voting  11/3/2008 Brad Blog: "Wide-spread voting machine failures have been reported to the Obama/DNC election protection hotline in Nevada since early voting began more than a week ago in the state, The BRAD BLOG has learned. All voters who vote in person in the crucial battleground state are forced to cast their vote on 100% unverifiable Sequoia EDGE touch-screen voting machines with the VeriVote "paper trail" printer add-on. Attorneys monitoring the incident reports coming in to the hotline have taken no action in regard to removing the failed machines from service, despite reports of the presidential race not appearing at all on some ballots; voters having problems selecting their preferred candidates; machines not starting up at all; "paper trail" printers jamming or running out of paper, and; a number of machines at a number of sites which refuse to work at all."

Prosecuting Voters - Voter Lockdown by John Kennedy O'Hara  11/3/2008 Counterpunch: "Thirteen campaign workers for Barack Obama in Ohio, including spokeswoman Olivia Alair, signed a letter on October 24th asking the Franklin County Board of Elections to pull their names from the voter rolls. One Obama staffer in Ohio told me, “We’re pretty nervous about this.” The concern was prompted by a warning from prosecutor Ron O’Brien, the elected county district attorney and a Republican, urging new Democratic voters to “examine your conscious” before filing their registration cards. Meanwhile, CNN announced that at least a dozen states are investigating allegedly fraudulent voter registrations among the flood of new registrants. Most of these are arrivals to the Democratic Party. Election officials nationwide estimate that 30 percent of the 1.3 million newly registered Democratic voters brought in by ACORN, an outreach organization based in poor communities, have been rejected. The source of most of these disputed registrations is a simple one – and very dangerous. The problem, allege prosecutors and election officials, is residence: Many of these “new” voters have simply moved to a new home. This may sound benign, but when a prosecutor warns you to “examine your conscious,” what it means is that the prosecutor will examine you. And when he talks about questioning the validity of your voting residence, what it really means is you might be going to jail for voting. I know this all too well from personal experience."

New Dem Secretaries of State Boost Obama's Chances  11/3/2008 Democratic Strategist: "Dem secretaries of state in battleground states are now "better positioned" to prioritize voter registration and increase turnout and perhaps more importantly, to interpret and administer election law, adds Zenilman. His article spotlights the big difference Ohio Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has made in making it hard for Republicans to steal votes this year, and Seyward Darby has more on Brunner's efforts in his New Republic article , "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall." Zenilman credits an independent 527 group, The Secretary of State ("SOS") Project for raising a decisive $500,000 that helped win '06 secretary of state races for Democrats, along with ActBlue, which contributed $24,000 to help elect Democrat Mary Herrera to the SOS post in NM. The Project sees a good chance to elect Dem SOS candidates tomorrow in MO, MT, OR and WV."

Petition to Pardon John O'Hara  11/3/2008 freejohnohara.com: "On Election Day, thousands of New Yorkers, including myself, could be subject to felony prosecution when we cast our vote. This is because of a precedent set by the case of the People v. John O’Hara. O’Hara’s story has been chronicled in Harper’s Magazine, in scores of articles in the New York Times and in every major daily, and even overseas in the pages of magazines like the New Zealand Herald. In 1996, at the age of 35, John Kennedy O’Hara was indicted by the Brooklyn district attorney for registering to vote and for voting. The nature of his crime? He voted from a residence that was not his “principal and permanent residence” – in other words, he kept two apartments and was registered to vote from one of them. Under the strictest interpretation of the election law statutes in New York State, voters are absurdly required to pledge allegiance to one residence, indefinitely. Otherwise, you’re subject to felony prosecution. No one before O’Hara had ever been prosecuted under this statute. The last case to be successfully brought for false registration and illegal voting took place in 1873, in Rochester, New York. The defendant in that case was Susan B. Anthony."

Toledo Police brace for possible civil unrest  11/3/2008 NBC: "Police chief Mike Navarre confirms, officers will have gear similar to the equipment they used during the 2005 race riots. "They have been asked to have their helmets and their gas masks available tomorrow and Wednesday.", Navarre says, "That's the equipment they would not normally carry with them on a normal day".

Mercenary Firm Offers to 'Detain Troublemakers' on Election Day (Updated)  11/3/2008 Wired: "The company, he said, 'proposes to post sentries at each voting center on November 4th to assure that disputes amongst citizens do not get out of control. All guards will be unarmed, but capable of stopping any violence that may occur and detaining troublemakers until law enforcement arrives.' Evergreen's website describes its security arm as having "nearly five decades of experience working with the U.S. Armed Forces, the Department of Defense, the Department of Interior, the United Nations, NASA, and the U.S. Air Mobility Command. Many of our contracts include highly sensitive work-scope, and take place in locations ranging from the deserts of the Middle East to the jungles of South America to the highest peaks of Mt. McKinley in Alaska."

Stolen Elections and Media Blackouts: Carolyn Baker Interviews Mark Crispin Miller  11/2/2008 Atlantic Free Press

Democrats Continue to Defend Their Indefensible Election Protection Efforts  11/2/2008 Brad Blog: "The article does nothing to assuage my concerns about the Dems self-proclaimed "behind the scenes" efforts on these matters. Bauer was still unable to offer a shred of evidence that the campaign or the DNC has taken such concerns about the use of wholly unverifiable voting systems --- and worse, allowing and actually encouraging election officials to access those machines during the election, at the time they are most vulnerable to tampering, for "recalibration" --- with the gravity the issue deserves. Incredibly (though no longer surprisingly), the Democrats persist with their tortured logic that taking action on problems with voting machines will somehow depress the electorate, before quickly changing the subject to concerns about Republican chicanery on the front-end voter suppression stuff. As an Election Integrity advocate recently noted rather eloquently, the front-end voter suppression issues and the back-end voting machine failures are two sides of the same coin. You can't worry about one without worrying about the other."

Obama lawyers defend ‘vote fraud’ efforts  11/2/2008 New Mexico Independent: "As Republican charges of “fraud” and Democratic claims of “voter suppression” have escalated in the home stretch of the presidential campaign, liberal activists have started blasting Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign’s “voter protection effort” for not doing enough to ensure that all Democratic votes will get counted on Election Day."

GOP offers scant proof of voter fraud  11/2/2008 Politico: "But Ronald Michaelson, a veteran election administrator and member of the McCain-Palin Honest and Open Election Committee, said in an interview that he could not name a single instance in which this had occurred. “Do we have a documented instance of voting fraud that resulted from a phony registration form? No, I can’t cite one, chapter and verse,” he said."

Secretaries of state give Dem firewall  11/2/2008 Politico: "The effort began in 2006 when a group of liberal California activists created an independent 527 group designed to elect secretaries of state. The Secretary of State Project ran independent ads of its own and ensured that donors — many of whom were affiliated with Democracy Alliance, a network of wealthy fundraisers that channels money to liberal causes across the country — knew which candidates deserved donations. They were frustrated by the ballot-counting actions of former Florida Republican Secretary of State Katherine Harris in 2000, and former Ohio Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell in 2004, both former campaign chairmen for George W. Bush who became prominent electoral boogeymen to the left."

Feds to monitor election fraud in Vermont  11/2/2008 Times Argus, Vermont: "Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Conroy will serve as the district election officer for the district of Vermont and will oversee any complaints. The Department of Justice established the Ballot Access and Voting Integrity Initiative in 2002 to deter voter fraud and to prosecute such activity when detected."

What's the Matter with Voting in Philadelphia? Answer: Marge Tartaglione (D)  11/1/2008 Brad Blog: "Since she says in the video we should take care to spell her name right, the woman responsible for running elections in Philadelphia is Marge Tartaglione (D) and, as the video suggests, she's a horror. And not only for her indefensible statements against the distribution of paper ballots to the effect of "long lines are not a problem...Long lines are no justification for any thing but waiting...people wait in long lines overnight for baseball tickets...people wait in line all night for a new Ipod."

RNC Denounces Flier Alleging Vote Suppression  11/1/2008 Market Watch: "Since 2004, we have known that the Democrats' written strategy is to launch 'pre-emptive' strikes and allege 'vote suppression' where none exists," Cairncross said. "In 2008, the Obama legal team has taken this reckless strategy to the next level and is distributing a document providing their operatives with a fictional voter suppression storyline to peddle."

Exit Poll Mess - 2008  11/1/2008 Scoop, New Zealand: "Who were these nearly 4.0 million new white big city voters and where did they come from? They were white “ghosts” who emerged from that 66% turnout “measured” by the exit poll, marching toward the polls like extras in the “Thriller” video. That’s the only place they could have come from because they’ve never been seen before or since. They were a necessary fiction required to balance out the official exit poll and allow it to be “adjusted” to fit the final vote count. Given the 16% turnout increase for the nation, isn’t it reasonable to assume something proximate in the big cities? But that’s not what happened. The turnout increase in the big cities was beyond belief but barely noticed."

Will This Election Be Stolen?  11/1/2008 Wall Street Journal: "The GOP's attack on the integrity of voters, carried out by party leaders -- a sitting president included -- on the eve of an election, is unprecedented."

500 Absentee Ballots Rejected for Alleged Signature Mismatches in Duval County, FL  10/31/2008 Brad Blog: "I was a little shocked," Rigg said. "But then again, my signature does not always match, from day to day. I said, 'What can I do to fix this? Can I come down and prove to you that I am who I am and I signed that ballot.'" Federal Judge Compels GOP IT Guru Mike Connell To Give Deposition in Ohio '04 Election Case  10/31/2008 Brad Blog: "The Republican IT guru, recently described as a "high tech Forrest Gump" for his proclivity to be "at the scene" of so many troubling elections since 2000, and even at the heart of the "lost" White House email scandal, has been ordered by a federal judge to appear for an under-oath deposition next Monday in Ohio. The BRAD BLOG has learned that Mike Connell, the Republican IT guru whose company, GovTech Solutions, created Ohio's 2004 election results computer network, appeared in federal court today, as compelled, and has been ordered to appear for his deposition on Monday, November 3, just 24 hours before Election Day 2008. Today's court order came after a contentious hearing, at which Connell was present. The hearing was part of a long-standing voting rights violations lawsuit, King Lincoln v. Long line snaps in spat over vote  10/31/2008 Go Upstate, NC: "What's clear is that Spartanburg County Republican Party Chairman Rick Beltram, taking the role of a poll watcher, challenged the vote of 74-year-old Fannie Rogers because he didn't believe her signature matched what was on her credentials. This upset the actual poll worker — the person who checks in a voter — and soon Ruby Rice, president of the Spartanburg NAACP branch, was involved."

Troops overseas miss out on voting  10/31/2008 Palm Beach Post: [Deployed troops show a 6 to 1 ration in donations to Obama vs McCain] - "In Florida, laws to make it easier for overseas military personnel to cast their ballots by fax are not worth much, according to Secretary of State Kurt Browning… "They laughed at us because faxes are just old technology. And there's no fax machines to speak of overseas," Browning said. Even if their ballots get in the mail, a federal audit found, only about 27 percent of the 77,000 military overseas ballots requested by Floridians in 2006 actually were counted. Florida military personnel, as well as civilians living overseas, can receive their ballots by e-mail, print them, fill them out and return them to elections supervisors by regular mail or fax. Mail sent from military bases in the Middle East, however, can take up to three weeks to be delivered, prompting the legislature to pass the law to allow overseas voters to fax them."

Advocates Warn 31 States They Could Lose Votes  10/30/2008 Alternet: "Today, three voting rights watch dog groups, the Brennan Center, Verified Voting, and Common Cause released an advisory to election officials warning that voting systems in specific states may not total votes correctly if proper procedures are not followed, and stressing that all vote totaling should be manually checked. The warning cited an August 19, 2008 product advisory notice issued by Premier voting systems, formerly Diebold, which acknowledged that the voting system does not always aggregate machine totals correctly when it is compiling votes from multiple polling locations. "What this means is that votes are intact in the machines, but when they are all compiled by the Premier tabulator at the county level, a number of them may be lost." said Bob Edgar, President of Common Cause. "To guard against this loss, election officials must manually check the math of the central tabulators by adding up the precinct votes themselves with a calculator."

Paper Ballots Will Return In MD and VA  10/30/2008 Slashdot: "According to a story in the Washington Post, 'Maryland and Virginia are going old school after Tuesday's election. Maryland will scrap its $65 million electronic system and go back to paper ballots in time for the 2010 midterm elections. In Virginia, localities are moving to paper after the General Assembly voted last year to phase out electronic voting machines as they wear out. "The battle for the hearts and minds of voters on whether electronic systems are good or bad has been lost," Brace said. The academics and computer scientists who said they were unreliable "have won that battle."'"

Witness to a Crime: a Citizens' Audit of an American Election  10/30/2008 Witness to a Crime: "There is the audit of the vote in 18 counties of Ohio that was carried out by Richard Hayes Phillips who published Witness To A Crime which is the result of three years labor by Richard and his researchers who literally scrutinized every single ballot that was cast in 18 Ohio counties. This book is scrupulous, precise, and explicit-fully illustrated and comes with a CD with illustrations of ballots and how they were tampered with... This book was supposed to be published by Kent State University Press, but when Phillips handed in the manuscript, they told him that it was twice as long as it should be and that they couldn't afford illustrations. This was not their original agreement. Phillips told them that without illustrations, the book isn't convincing, and he then decided to self-publish. Nevertheless, it's a superb book, beautifully written, but it has sold to date, 900 copies. He put his life savings into it and he's been trying to promote it, and as you can see, it's highly specific and technical. Therefore, it's a sort of an unwieldy smoking gun, but it is a smoking gun because they discovered that John Kerry was variously robbed of two hundred thousand votes in those 18 counties alone. There's no argument with this. In the illustrations you can see ballots with stickers placed over the square beside John Kerry's name, thousands of ballots that were marked so that they would be over-votes when people voted on them. The range and the ingenuity of the fraud tactics are astonishing. After Phillips did his research, 55 boards of election out of 86 counties in Ohio, in defiance of a court order, destroyed all or part of their ballots-that is 1.5 million ballots. That was a malicious destruction of evidence."

Adams County ‘quarantines’ machine that switched candidate’s vote  10/29/2008 Colorado Independent: "An electronic voting machine in Adams County repeatedly failed to accept a vote for a Democratic state Senate candidate — instead registering the vote for her Republican opponent — at an early voting site last week and has been removed from service, the Aurora Sentinel reports Wednesday. Adams County Clerk and Recorder Karen Long told the newspaper the error doesn’t reflect wider problems in the county’s voting systems, but the candidate said the incident could lead to a lawsuit. “I always just trusted the machines, and it opened my eyes,” said state Rep. Mary Hodge. “The way it works now, I’m told … is that those votes throw it to Mr. Hadfield that we’ll probably have a lawsuit and a court decision. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Allegheny: Timely reminder - 27% rejection of provisional  10/27/2008 Black Box Voting: "The presidential-election system already is an unholy mess, in large part because it is managed at the local level. According to the Washington Post, more than 10,000 jurisdictions run voting operations, with polling places staffed largely by amateurs with varying levels of training. Small mistakes can have large impacts. For example, in the Pennsylvania primary this year, 27 percent of provisional ballots in Allegheny County were disqualified because poll workers didn't fill out the envelopes properly. A dizzying patchwork of voting regulations, and idiosyncratic interpretations provide ample opportunities for serious mischief."

Party Lawyers Ready to Keep an Eye on the Polls  10/27/2008 NYT: "Senator Barack Obama’s campaign is expected to send at least 5,000 lawyers to Florida alone. The first recruitment e-mail message the campaign sent out nationally received 6,000 responses from lawyers willing to volunteer. Meanwhile, Senator John McCain’s campaign has lined up “Lawyers for McCain” to spread out at polling places in closely contested states as advocates for the ticket. Both campaigns plan to use the lawyers to protect their supporters at the polls, help untangle ballot problems and run to court should litigation be necessary. Given the heated ballot challenges in the 2000 and 2004 elections, getting legal talent on the ground on Election Day is becoming as common a tool for the campaigns as advertising and polling."

This Year’s Butterfly Ballot  10/27/2008 NYT: "Like a number of states, North Carolina allows its voters to choose a straight-party ticket. To do that, voters can mark one box and cast votes for all of the nominees of their preferred party. But North Carolina’s ballot has an unexpected twist. Even if a voter checks the straight-party box, he or she must vote separately for a presidential candidate."

Democrats Describe Efforts to Limit Voting Machines Problems  10/26/2008 Alternet: "As one participant on the PDA conference call said, "We're losing votes every day." Implicit in the hand wringing is the question, 'Where is the Democratic Party when it comes to safeguarding the vote?' The answer, according to lawyers and others who been pushing the Democratic National Committee to be pro-active on electronic voting issues, is that the DNC has assembled a nationwide team tasked to voting machine concerns. They have been at work behind the scenes since the start of early voting -- following up with state and local officials when problems arise, these lawyers say. While the DNC's effort may not seem apparent or sufficient to activists, those doing this work say it is unprecedented and comprehensive." [But it is dwarfed by Election Protection!]

Stolen Elections and Media Blackouts An Interview With Mark Crispin Miller  10/26/2008 Global Research: "Spoonamore has named the principal players in the Bush-Cheney election fraud conspiracy. Specifically, he has named Mike Connell, who has been helping Karl Rove steal elections since Florida, 2000. Connell is the head of a company called GOVTECH Solutions. If you check out a piece by Rebecca Abrahams on the destruction of White House emails, which is actually about much more than that, you'll learn that there's a list made up by Spoonamore that he composed after a very troubling meeting of all the online entities and companies that Connell runs or is involved with. It's a huge menu of partisan and theocratic [Christianist, pro-life] outfits-all part of the same terrifying matrix of disinformation, subversion, and sabotage. Connell told Spoonamore that his motive for helping Bush-Cheney steal elections was "to save the babies". As progressives, this is something we have to wrap our minds around because it turns out that most of the people who are involved in the management of high-tech fraud are Christianists. These people are fanatics who hate the majority. The majority doesn't buy their pro-life agenda; the majority isn't going to sit still for bans on contraception. The only way around that, in their eyes, is to subvert the electorate."

In her decision, Judge Diane Kavadias Schneider dismissed complaints from local GOP officials trying to block the sites on the grounds they violated local election rules and created a risk for voter fraud."

From Goldwater's Eagle Eyes to ACORN - What Voter Fraud?  10/23/2008 Counterpunch: "In the 1964 presidential contest between Democrat Lyndon Johnson and Republican Barry Goldwater, Republicans launched “Operation Eagle Eye,” ostensibly to guard against illegal voters. The party planned to station 100,000 “eagle eyes” at polling places across America to spot fraudulent voters. In fact, this “ballot security” operation was targeted at minority neighborhoods in 36 cities and circulated handbills which warned that authorities could arrest voters who had an outstanding parking ticket or a traffic violation. Operation Eagle Eye turned up not a single fraudulent voter and had little impact Johnson’s landslide victory."

Barack Obama's presidential campaign, sent a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey requesting that special prosecutor Nora Dannehy add recent allegations of partisan misconduct within the Justice Department to her investigation of criminal offenses stemming from the 2006 U.S. Attorney firings. In his letter, Bauer, a partner in Perkins Coie's Washington office, alleges that Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign and the Republican Party made false claims of voting fraud as part of a Republican effort to influence the presidential election. The letter accuses Republican officeholders of calling on the Justice Department to investigate allegations of fraud, and Justice Department officials of spurring what he called "baseless" investigations."

Voter-Fraud Fraud  10/15/2008 New Yorker: "Sounds suspicious—unless you know that groups like ACORN are required by law to submit them, even if they’re obvious fakes. This is to prevent funny business, such as trashing forms that look like they might be Republican (or Democratic, as the case may be). Sounds suspicious—unless you know that ACORN normally sorts through forms, flags those that look fishy, and submits the fishy ones in a separate pile for the convenience of election officials. Sounds suspicious—until you reflect that the motivation of the misbehaving registration workers is almost always to look like they’ve been doing more work than they really have, and that the victim of the “fraud” is actually the organization they’re working for."

Court Ruling May Impede Thousands of Ohio Voters  10/15/2008 NYT: [Repubs caging again] - "Daniel P. Tokaji, a law professor and voting expert at Ohio State University, said he thought the appellate decision was wrong. He said the stated purpose of the “matching” requirement in the federal law, the 2002 Help America Vote Act, was to accelerate procedures at the polls, somewhat like an E-Zpass lane at highway toll plazas. It was meant to allow voters to avoid showing identification if they had already been screened using database checks, he said. The federal matching requirement, Mr. Tokaji said, was not meant to determine eligibility, deter voter fraud or raise added barriers for voters by forcing some to vote provisionally. “The majority judges don’t seem to grasp this point,” he said."

The GOP Escalates Its Nutty Attacks on ACORN  10/14/2008 Alternet: "In recent weeks, conservatives have escalated their attacks on ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Conservative lawmakers were able to remove a provision aimed at aiding low-income housing programs from the Bush administration's $700 billion economic bailout bill by calling it a "slush fund" for ACORN. Before that, conservatives blamed ACORN for "precipitating the subprime crisis." And last week, they alleged that the "purpose" of ACORN is to engage in voter fraud. However, as columnist Joel McNally correctly noted, the "underlying motive for attacking ACORN" seems to be that it is the "nation's largest grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people." "It is an organization that engages in that dreaded community organizing," McNally wrote. "It actually tries to give a voice to the poor and most vulnerable among us." Indeed, after years of enacting policies catering to the wealthy, the right-wing seems to be fearful of millions of new low-income voters registered by ACORN casting their ballots in favor of progressive policies."

Obama: We don't need ACORN's help  10/14/2008 CNN: "Obama campaign manager David Plouffe and general counsel Bob Bauer accused Republicans of trying to intimidate voters and sow the seeds of confusion as the historic presidential election approaches. "They seem to be setting up a strategy here to make it harder to vote," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe told reporters on a conference call. "To create a situation where voters don't have confidence in the system." "They are going to try to raise questions. You know, cry out and raise questions about fraud and try and create a smokescreen out there to confuse voters and perhaps to give cover to some of the activities they're going to be undertaking over the next three weeks."

How McCain Will Steal the Election from Obama (Sort Of)  10/12/2008 Huffington Post: "But ACORN goes a step farther. They have people assigned to do quality control on all the cards--calling people on the forms after they fill them out. When they find bad information on the cards they attach a cover sheet to the card but, as mentioned above, they turn in the cards as required by law. The effect is that a few bad canvassers or a poorly run office will mean that bad cards are submitted as part of the normal process. But ACORN has done everything possible to make sure voting officials know to check the forms. The sad fact is that in at least one state--Nevada--the voting officials disregarded ACORN's cover sheets flagging the voter registration forms. That should have never happened. The resulting blowup was a scandal in search of a scandal. The stunning con of this whole thing is the assumption that bad voter registration cards being submitted will lead to vote fraud. If somebody submits a card for Mickey Mouse it isn't like Mr. Mouse is going to show up to vote. There is no voter fraud if nobody votes."

Greene Sheriff Gene Fischer decided last week that he had heard enough rumors regarding potential voter fraud, so he investigated. Fischer, a Republican, went to the local elections board and asked for all the information on the roughly 300 recently registered voters. These are public records, but Fischer wanted everything, including nonpublic information like Social Security and driver's license numbers."

Republicans try to tie Obama to vote fraud cases  10/10/2008 Boston Globe: "In 1995, as a lawyer in private practice, Obama and two other lawyers from his firm represented ACORN in a successful suit that forced the state of Illinois to comply with a federal law that made it easier to register to vote. The group's political arm endorsed Obama this February and an ACORN-affiliated group was paid about $800,000 for get-out-the-vote operations in four states during the primaries. The Obama campaign flatly denied Republican assertions that Obama once trained ACORN employees. Yesterday, RNC chief counsel Sean Cairncross called ACORN "a quasi-criminal organization" engaged in "a systematic effort to undermine the integrity of the election process nationwide." He said the organization's voter registration activities are under investigation in Nevada, New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, and Missouri."

Voter Purges Could Cause Florida-like Presidential Recounts  10/9/2008 Alternet: "With less than four weeks to go before the 2008 presidential vote, new practices in key swing states to update voter rolls are coming under fire for mistakes that could involve rejecting tens of thousands of legitimate voters, suggesting that close vote counts in these states could lead to legal fights echoing Florida's presidential recount in 2000. According to a New York Times report on Oct. 9, key swing states -- including Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Missouri -- have been using federal Social Security data to verify voter registration information from established and potential voters. The Social Security data, which is used to authenticate voters' identity but is known to be error-prone, has been used to purge "tens of thousands" of voters already on voter rolls, the Times reported, as well as to reject numerous new voter registration applications."

Ohio Court Rules for McCain-Palin on Absentee Ballots  10/2/2008 WaPo: "The applications at issue in Thursday's case contain a checkbox that appears on the forms -- in addition to a signature line -- for voters to state that they are qualified to vote and request an absentee ballot. The McCain camp mailed 1 million of the forms in Ohio. In September, Brunner advised county elections boards to reject the forms if the box was not checked, even if the application had been signed, saying that without a checkmark a voter's intent was unclear. More than 3,500 ballots already had been rejected for that reason by boards, the court determined. The court rejected Brunner's interpretation and also said that an unchecked box did not provide evidence of voter fraud. Rejecting ballots solely over the lack of a checkmark, the court wrote, served "no vital purpose or public interest." [When it's the Republicans, there is no voter fraud, only for Democrats]

CBS News: New Study Details Massive Voter Roll Purges Underway in At Least 19 States  9/30/2008 Brad Blog

Making the List: Database Matching and Verification Processes for Voter Registration  9/30/2008 Brennan Center: published 3/06 - "This report is the first comprehensive summary of critically important new voter registration procedures effective in most states at the beginning of 2006. Federal law now requires, as of January 1, 2006, that states create and maintain statewide databases to serve as the central source of voter registration information. Citizens ability to get on the rollsand thus their ability to vote and have their votes countedwill now depend on the policies and procedures governing the use of these databases in the voter registration process. Evidence demonstrates that poor policy and procedure choices could result in the unwarranted disenfranchisement of millions of eligible citizens attempting to register to vote. The new statewide databases, and their role in the voter registration process, are poorly understood, but extremely consequential."

Report: Voter Purges  9/30/2008 Brennan Center: "Far too frequently, however, eligible, registered citizens show up to vote and discover their names have been removed from the voter lists. States maintain voter rolls in an inconsistent and unaccountable manner. Officials strike voters from the rolls through a process that is shrouded in secrecy, prone to error, and vulnerable to manipulation. While the lack of transparency in purge practices precludes a precise figure of the number of those erroneously purged, we do know that purges have been conducted improperly before. In 2004, for example, Florida planned to remove 48,000 “suspected felons” from its voter rolls. Many of those identified were in fact eligible to vote. The flawed process generated a list of 22,000 African Americans to be purged, but only 61 voters with Hispanic surnames, notwithstanding Florida’s sizable Hispanic population. Under pressure from voting rights groups, Florida ordered officials to stop using the purge list. Although this purge was uncovered and mostly stopped before it was completed, other improper purges may go undetected and unremedied."

Red Flag On Purging Voter Rolls  9/30/2008 CBS: "States and counties regularly update their voter registration rolls for accuracy, removing people who have moved, died, or committed a felony. It is known as "voter purging." But, the new report by the non-partisan public policy and law institute, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law provides troubling new insight into the process. There are no national standards and as a result, the cleaning up of voter rolls is not as precise as it should be and eligible voters are often wrongly removed."

Vote-scam fliers target black neighborhoods  9/30/2008 Philadelphia Inquirer: "An anonymous flier circulating in African-American neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia states that voters who are facing outstanding arrest warrants or who have unpaid traffic tickets may be arrested at the polls on Election Day. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Everett Gillison, who learned of the flier last week, said that the message is completely false. "The only thing that police officers are going to do that we'll be encouraging that day is that they'll be exercising their own individual right to vote," Gillison said… Stalberg said that he feared that there could be more fliers to come. "I'm a little surprised it appeared this far before Election Day," he said. "It's another indication of how dirty this election might become."

RFK Jr., : "Is Your Vote Safe?" - Interview with Mike Papantonio, Air America Radio  9/29/2008 Global Research: "There are about 30 scams the Republicans are deliberately using, particularly in the swing states to get Democratic voters off the rolls. These scams originate in the so-called Help America Vote Act which was passed after the Florida debacle in the year 2000. It was originally suggested by Democrats and Republicans but it was passed by a Republican congress with a Republican senate and a Republican president. And instead of reforming what happened in Florida it basically institutionalized all the problems that happened in Florida. And institutionalized a series of impediments that make it very difficult for Democrats to register, for Democrats to vote and then for Democrats to have their vote counted. "One of these requirements under HAVA is called "the perfect match" and what that does is little known but it is devastating. A quarter of the voters in Colorado have just been removed from the rolls because of this - just this one scam. And what it does is they use a computer system to compare your registration application to all other government records of you in the state. So they'll look at your social security records, your motor vehicle records and any time you've had any interaction with the government and if there is any information on your voter registration that is different than the information on another government record that they find they remove you from the voting rolls."

Republican IT consultant subpoenaed in case alleging tampering with 2004 election  9/29/2008 Raw Story: "Given that the Bush White House used SmarTech servers to send and receive email, the use of one of those servers in tabulating Ohio’s election returns has raised eyebrows. Ohio gave Bush the decisive margin in the Electoral College to secure his reelection in 2004. IT expert Stephen Spoonamore says the SmartTech server could have functioned as a routing point for malicious activity and remains a weakness in electronic voting tabulation. According to Spoonamore’s Sept. 17 affidavit, the “computer placement, in the middle of the network, is a defined type of attack.” Spoonamore describes this as a “Man in the Middle Attack” or MIM."

Don't give in to GOP vote shenanigans  9/27/2008 Capital Times, WI: "By forcing thousands of legitimate voters to re-register at their polling places or to go through additional paperwork to cast provisional ballots, Republicans hope to create even more delays at urban polling places. Those of us who waited three hours to vote in 2004 may have to wait four hours or more this time. Stay mad the entire time and more determined than ever to triumph over Republican vote fraud."

US election: McCain aides attack group's voter registration processes  9/22/2008 Guardian, UK: "Two advisers to John McCain's presidential campaign today said a flood of questionable voter registration applications in swing states threatens to undermine the accuracy of the November election and could prevent legitimate voters from registering for a ballot. The warning came less than a week after the Democratic party filed a lawsuit in Michigan seeking to end what its lawyers said were Republican efforts to suppress votes of poor people and African Americans, two historically Democratic constituencies. The move indicates the Democratic and Republican parties are set to battle over voter registration in the remaining weeks of the campaign."

McCain/GOP 'Voter Caging' Underway in Florida  9/18/2008 Brad Blog: "The first-class GOP mailing has a "Do not forward" instruction on the envelope, meaning they will be returned to the GOP if a recipient has had mail forwarded, perhaps to a summer address, or has moved. Letters returned as undeliverable can be compiled into "challenge lists" of unverifiable addresses and can be used to challenge voters' eligibility during early voting or on Election Day. The vote suppression technique is known as "vote caging."

[crowd boos] Ladies and gentleman, if you're worried about losing your home, you should vote for the guys who are prepared to help you keep your home, not those would take it away!" The Michigan Republican Party has since demanded a retraction from the Michigan Messenger and has threatened a lawsuit, but according to Olbermann, as of Wednesday afternoon no legal papers had been filed. However, the Democrats have filed their own lawsuit, seeking an injunction against the tactic."

'Third-Party' Presidential Candidates Hold D.C. Presser; McKinney Speaks to Election Integrity  9/12/2008 Brad Blog: "MCKINNEY: I think any construct that encourages people to vote their values is an appropriate one. However, what has not been mentioned this morning, and has rarely been mentioned throughout this presidential election season, is the issue of election integrity. And unfortunately what we have are problems that have been compounded – problems from 2000, again in 2004, and now in 2008. Different problems, unresolved problems, while the Congressional majority – the Democratic majority in Congress had the opportunity to address these issues, they have not done so. So, for example, for those of you who are not familiar with the film “American Blackout”, it methodologically demonstrates how the election in 2000, and again in 2004, how those two presidential elections were stolen, and the use of certain political constructs in order to disenfranchise certain populations."

Lose your house, lose your vote  9/10/2008 Michigan Messenger: "The Macomb GOP’s plans are another indication of how John McCain’s campaign stands to benefit from the burgeoning number of foreclosures in the state. McCain’s regional headquarters are housed in the office building of foreclosure specialists Trott & Trott. The firm’s founder, David A. Trott, has raised between $100,000 and $250,000 for the Republican nominee. The Macomb County party’s plans to challenge voters who have defaulted on their house payments is likely to disproportionately affect African-Americans who are overwhelmingly Democratic voters. More than 60 percent of all sub-prime loans — the most likely kind of loan to go into default — were made to African-Americans in Michigan, according to a report issued last year by the state’s Department of Labor and Economic Growth."

What’s important here is not so much what’s going out as what’s being returned to sender. Unbeknownst to the would-be recipients, the same mailer — just 60 days before the election — has the potential to determine their eligibility to vote, challenged not by election officials but by partisan opposition."

The answer is George Bush made her head of the brand new Election Assistance Commission, where she can train all 50 secretaries of state in her purging ways. In fact, President Bush, instead of calling her chairwoman of the EAC, was going to call her the Purging General.”

The problem was identified after complaints from Ohio elections officials following the March primary there, but the logic error that is the root of the problem has been part of the software for 10 years, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions, formerly known as Diebold."

Taking machines home makes it nearly impossible to keep track of what happens to a machine or memory card once it goes into the custody of a poll worker, Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner said. The changes are meant to address actual security concerns - including the fear that machines could be tampered with - but to also address national perceptions of Ohio's election system, which has come under fire in recent years, Brunner said."

Voting Machine Doubts Linger - Concerns Over Vulnerability Of Electronic Machines Sending Many States Back To Paper Ballots  8/16/2008 CBS News: "Four of of ten American voters will be casting ballots this November on equipment that's different from what they used in 2004. One reason is the doubts raised about ATM-syle electronic touch-screen machines, which have prompted half a dozen states to turn them off and turn back to paper ballots. In fact, at least 55 percent of Americans voting this November will vote on paper ballots that will be counted by optical scanners, according to Virginia-based Election Data Services, Inc. "That's an all-time high for optical scan usage in this nation," says EDS President Kimball Brace. Only one-third of voters will be using touch-screen systems, according to EDS."

Rove’s Cyber Guru, Michael Connell, has worked for the Bush family for over 20 years and helped Bush Sr., Jeb and Bush Jr. “win” their elections using his computer skills. Whistleblowers, including Republicans, say that several of these and other national elections have been rigged through various invisible and illegal means, including vote tabulation manipulation, improper partisan use of the Justice Department to target Democrats and uncooperative US Attorneys, and the laundering of hundreds of millions of corporate dollars funneled into fake advocacy groups directed against Democrat candidates running for public office."

I was constantly asking Republicans, “If there are so many criminal voters, why haven’t you arrested them? Why aren’t there prosecutions?” The Republicans said, “Oh, there will be. Talk to David Iglesias.” I called him and other prosecutors and got all this hemming and hawing. So, I’m being told that Iglesias is about to bring prosecutions and he is saying, “I don’t think so.” It’s very clear to me that Iglesias was resisting phony prosecutions. He ran around the bases looking for fraudulent voters and he didn’t find one. Some were in the military, so they were not at their voting addresses."

In swing state New Mexico, HALF of the Democrats of Mora, a dirt poor and overwhelmingly Hispanic county, found their registrations disappeared this year, courtesy of a Republican voting contractor. In swing states Ohio and Nevada, new federal law is knocking out tens of thousands of voters who lost their homes to foreclosure."

Texas: All state AG's cases in last 2 years target Dems  5/18/2008 Houston Chronicle: "DALLAS — Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, who said two years ago Texas faced an epidemic of vote fraud, has prosecuted 26 cases since then and all against Democrats, most of them blacks or Hispanics, according to a published report. The cases have usually resulted in small fines and little or no jail time, The Dallas Morning News reported in Sunday's editions. The newspaper said none of the cases involved large schemes with the potential to tip elections. Democrats accused Abbott of conducting a partisan campaign to intimidate minority voters. Abbott established a special vote-fraud unit in his office, used a $1.4 million federal grant and sent investigators to look for fraud. Most of the cases his office pursued involved mail-in ballots. In 18 of the 26 cases, the voters were eligible and their votes were properly cast, but the people who gathered them for mailing were prosecuted. State law bans carrying someone else's completed ballot to the mailbox unless the carrier's name and address are on the envelope. Matt Angle of the Lone Star Project, a group that supports Democrats, said Abbott has mostly gone after people in heavily Democratic precincts who helped elderly or disabled neighbors vote. Angle called the prosecutions "an exercise in intimidation. They are trying to send a message to a much larger community that voting is a risky business."

Voter ID Battle Shifts to Proof of Citizenship  5/12/2008 NYT: "The measure would allow far more rigorous demands than the voter ID requirement recently upheld by the Supreme Court, in which voters had to prove their identity with a government-issued card. Sponsors of the amendment — which requires the approval of voters to go into effect, possibly in an August referendum — say it is part of an effort to prevent illegal immigrants from affecting the political process. Critics say the measure could lead to the disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of legal residents who would find it difficult to prove their citizenship. Voting experts say the Missouri amendment represents the next logical step for those who have supported stronger voter ID requirements and the next battleground in how elections are conducted. Similar measures requiring proof of citizenship are being considered in at least 19 state legislatures. Bills in Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma and South Carolina have strong support. But only in Missouri does the requirement have a chance of taking effect before the presidential election."

Drug pilot, election exec killed on CIA plane  5/7/2008 Mad Cow Morning News: "The downed plane's relevance to the ongoing story of vote fraud in America involves the identity of it's passenger, Jose Alfredo Anzola, a 34-year old founder of Smartmatic, a Venezuela-based election company whose American subsidiary counted one in every three votes in the 2004 Presidential election, while engaged the whole time in heated controversy over allegations the firm counting America's votes had hidden ties to—of all people— Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez. The connection between last week's plane crash and the ongoing saga of CIA Drug trafficking begins with 43-year old Mario Donadi Gafaro, the veteran drug pilot at the controls of the twin engine plane."

One million purged - The Incredible Disappearing Indiana Voter Rolls  5/4/2008 Black Box Voting: "One quarter-million of them come from just two northwestern Indiana counties: Lake and Porter. Lake County reports purging 137,164 voters and neighboring Porter County cancelled out 124,958 voters. Lake County, the home of Gary, Indiana, has spawned the Jackson Five and a great old musical (The Music Man) and and has been referred to as "the second most liberal county in America." Lake County has one of the heaviest concentrations of African-American voters that you'll find anywhere in the USA. Nearby Porter County, the home of Valparaiso, is 95% white and went solidly for Bush in the 2004 election. It also has a lot of college kids."

FACING SOUTH EXCLUSIVE: D.C. nonprofit aimed at women voters behind deceptive N.C. robo-calls  4/30/2008 Facing South: "First, a quick recap: As we covered yesterday, N.C. residents have reported receiving peculiar automated calls from someone claiming to be "Lamont Williams." The caller says that a "voter registration packet" is coming in the mail, and the recipient can sign it and mail it back to be registered to vote. No other information is provided. The call is deceptive because the deadline has already passed for mail-in registrations for North Carolina's May 6 primary. Also, many who have received the calls -- like Kevin Farmer in Durham, who made a tape of the call that is available here -- are already registered. The call's suggestion that they're not registered has caused widespread confusion and drawn hundreds of complaints, including many from African-American voters who received the calls. The calls are also probably illegal. Farmer and others have told Facing South the calls use a blocked phone number and provided no contact information -- a violation of North Carolina rules regulating "robo-calls" (N.C. General Statute 163-104(b)(1)c). N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper further stated in a recent memo that the identifying information must be clear enough to allow the recipient to "complain or seek redress" -- something not included in the calls."

As Election Nears, Supreme Court Upholds Repressive Voter ID Law  4/28/2008 Alternet: "The Court's 6–3 opinion in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, widely considered the most important voting rights case since Bush v. Gore, recognized that ID laws may have negative impact, even when there is not sufficient evidence to find them unconstitutional. As six Justices agreed, Indiana's law places a heavier burden on some eligible citizens, particularly elderly and low-income persons who could be blocked from voting without the proper documentation. The Brennan Center urged lawmakers to heed the disenfranchising impacts of ID laws acknowledged in today's decision."

'Daily Voting News' For April 24, 2008  4/24/2008 Brad Blog: "What happened in Pennsylvania and what can be done about it? All indications, outside of the main stream media, are that there were problems all over the state with voting systems. There were many anecdotal reports of vote flipping and other machines failures that never made it into the media. State election officials from the Secretary of State on down seem to have misrepresented the facts as they talked about the “scattered” problems and the media reported that propaganda. The state needs to do an honest appraisal of their voting systems and decide whether the status quo is more important than the voter’s voices."

"Dirty Tricks" We know who really won....…  4/23/2008 Blog on BarackObama.com: "Six of ten machines were down at a busy Delaware County polling site. It took 103 people 8 hours to vote in Upper Darby, which is heavily populated by immigrant and first time voters. Many of those freshly-minted voters had difficulties using the six machines that still functioned. "Hell of a day for six of the machines to go down," said one poll worker. In South Philadelphia, voting machines were broken at 4th and Ritner, smack dab in the middle of a Obama strong hold. "The dirty tricks have begun," said John Lucas, spokesman for the election board, who sees a conspiracy… At these two sites, election judges, clerks and inspectors, all nominally paid volunteers, initially were unable to print out verification that the voting machines had been set at zero. A technician was dispatched to each location and helped to properly set up the machines, upon further inspection machines had been manipulated and set with 500 to 1500 votes calibrated to Clinton. Only 30 people in Banksville and several more in North Braddock could use emergency paper ballots to cast their votes, "30 ballots for an entire district" If that's not fraud, i don't know what is. Heavily black districts didn't have any ballots at all just broken or defective machines that didn't work."

Hillary Clinton: The Luckiest Woman in the World  4/23/2008 Brad Blog: "Well...not necessarily "dramatically", since election integrity organizations observing and fielding calls from voters yesterday in PA reported that "problems with voting machines and inaccurate voter registration rolls caused countless eligible voters to be needlessly refused the right to vote." But "countless" doesn't necessarily translate into one-tenth of a percent! So the computers reported that she won --- whether dramatically or not --- beyond a shadow of a doubt in both states! Well...beyond a shadow of a doubt may be an overstatement, since in Pennsylvania, it's not as if the officials there could actually prove that any vote cast yesterday for a candidate on the ballot on any of the 85% of the states votes recorded on electronic machines, was actually cast or recorded as any voter intended. But still...even with a 100% dearth of actual evidence to prove that Clinton won, much less by a comfortable, well, a one-tenth of a percent margin large enough to quality as "double-digit" for the most of the media...well, you must admit that she's a very very lucky woman, and you can't prove otherwise either!"

Election Fraud in Pennsylvania?  4/20/2008 Scoop, New Zealand: "Citizens want to know that the candidate taking office is the same candidate who won a majority or a plurality of the votes. A 2006 Zogby poll of 1018 registered voters nationwide found that 92% believed that they, as citizens, have the right to witness vote counting for the election of their paid public servants. That will not be the case in Pennsylvania any more than it was the case in Florida, Ohio, California, South Carolina, and most other primary states. Almost all states bar any real inspection of vote counting, the process that determines the election result. Even if they did allow you to watch the count, all you would see is a whirring third-rate computer system run by a private company that won't allow anyone to take a comprehensive look inside. Post election audits are either absent or randomly selected by the people who run the election. Recounts require an exceptionally close election, less than a 1% difference typically. And citizen recounts after the election, where paper records exist, are barred by law in Florida and Virginia and barred almost everywhere else by bureaucratic fiat."

How Republicans Quietly Hijacked the Justice Department to Swing Elections  4/15/2008 Alternet: "Jim Crow has returned to American elections, only in the twenty-first century, instead of men in white robes or a barrel-chested sheriff menacingly patrolling voting precincts, we are more likely to see a lawyer carrying a folder filled with briefing papers and proposed legislation about "voter fraud" and other measures to supposedly protect the sanctity of the vote. Since the 2004 election, activist lawyers with ties to the Republican Party and its presidential campaigns, Republican legislators, and even the Supreme Court -- in a largely unnoticed ruling in 2006 -- have been aggressively regulating most aspects of the voting process. Collectively, these efforts are undoing the gains of the civil rights era that brought voting rights to minorities and the poor, groups that tend to support Democrats."

Voting-Machine Maker to Princeton Researcher: ‘Hands Off’  3/18/2008 WSJ: "Princeton Professor Edward Felten astonished Congress and increased doubts about electronic voting two years ago when he showed a House committee how easily he could open a Diebold touch-screen machine, insert new software and alter vote totals. Now, Sequoia Voting Systems, the other large voting-machine maker, has sent Felten an email suggesting legal action if he tries the same thing on its equipment. Felten, a computer scientist, said the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey approached him after about 60 Sequoia voting machines across the state seemed to malfunction during the state’s Feb. 5 primary. ...Voting equipment makers have frequently used proprietary-rights arguments to prevent researchers from testing the security of their equipment."

NY Times: 0-bama at as Many as 80 'Heavily Black' New York City Precincts  2/16/2008 Brad Blog: "For the moment, the New York Times offers little evidence for anything, even while it draws a bead on those big nasty lever voting machines (NY is one the last places in the country to still use them), as somehow the root of the problem, as exacerbated by "human error", of course. It's worth noting here that Election Integrity folks in New York have been in the midst of a pitched battle with the state, NYC, and even the Dept. of Justice as they try to ensure that NY's move to "upgraded" voting systems will include paper ballot systems. Notable then, is a graphic that runs along with the Times article (reposted at bottom of this article) explaining how tallies are collected from NY's lever machines and then --- for some reason --- collected on a computer. Those tallies are then given to Associated Press (instead of to election officials), which demonstrates that yes, computers do come into play in NY's system, and could as well be the root of the problem, along with human error, bad lever machines, or anything else."

Unofficial Tallies in City Understated Obama Vote  2/16/2008 NYT: "Black voters are heavily represented in the 94th Election District in Harlem’s 70th Assembly District. Yet according to the unofficial results from the New York Democratic primary last week, not a single vote in the district was cast for Senator Barack Obama. Counting the Results That anomaly was not unique. In fact, a review by The New York Times of the unofficial results reported on primary night found about 80 election districts among the city’s 6,106 where Mr. Obama supposedly did not receive even one vote, including cases where he ran a respectable race in a nearby district. City election officials this week said that their formal review of the results, which will not be completed for weeks, had confirmed some major discrepancies between the vote totals reported publicly — and unofficially — on primary night and the actual tally on hundreds of voting machines across the city. In the Harlem district, for instance, where the primary night returns suggested a 141 to 0 sweep by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the vote now stands at 261 to 136. In an even more heavily black district in Brooklyn — where the vote on primary night was recorded as 118 to 0 for Mrs. Clinton — she now barely leads, 118 to 116."

Harlem Mystery: Did Rangel's District Go for Barack Obama?  2/16/2008 The Nation: "No one is suggesting that Rangel did anything wrong. There are many explanations for why vote counts are off, and there are many players in the process -- and Rangel is one of the more honorable of the lot. What New Yorkers should be asking for, however, is a complete review of the results in New York City, with a heavy focus not just on the 80 election district where Obama supposedly received no votes but also on those where it appears that his vote was far below the level of support that he received in surrounding districts -- and that might reasonably be expected."

Obama's Biggest Opposition is not Clinton: It's Overcoming Voter Suppression  2/14/2008 Black Commentator: "Is California the “new” Florida? That’s what many voters are asking after the nation’s largest state, California, was engaged in a massive voter dispute around “Decline To States" (DTS) voters (what the rest of the nation commonly refers to as Independent voters) in last week’s primary election. While the political pundits and delegate “bean counters” called the state for Clinton 20 minutes after the polls closed, it was learned that hundreds of thousands of California’s independent voters were not being counted. California has over 700,000 “decline to state” voters – some 94,000 who voted in Los Angeles County alone, and were allowed to vote in the state’s Democratic Primary. It was disclosed at the end of Election Day that if DTS voters failed to punch a bubble at the top of their ballots, their vote wouldn’t count. Well, there was only one problem with that - most poll workers didn’t inform voters that it was necessary to do so. Invariably, most did not (including myself). Now they’re telling us our vote won’t count - not in 1868, or 1968 - but in 2008. I don’t think so… Funny how when change shows up so does oppression and repression. Or in this case, suppression."

When is a Delegate Not a Delegate? Lessons for Barack Obama  2/11/2008 Counterpunch: "Take Alabama. On February 5, Super Tuesday, Obama won that primary in convincing fashion by a margin of nearly 20 points. But when the dust settled, he and Hillary Clinton ended up with an equal number of pledged delegates from the state. Why? The delegates were proportioned according to the votes in the state's 7 congressional districts and like all such political real estate in the USA, these districts have been gerrymandered to corral the black vote in as small a number of districts as possible. Result, Obama won 83 per cent of the black vote, but the those numbers were concentrated in two or three districts so even though Obama ran up 70-30 triumphs and Hillary battled to 55 to 45 margins of victory, the count at the end of the day gave them the same number of delegates each."

Privatization of New Mexico Voting Rolls May Have Played Major Role in Super Tuesday's Democratic Caucus Mess  2/8/2008 Brad Blog: "On Wednesday, we covered some of the massive problems emerging from New Mexico's Democratic Party Caucus on Super Tuesday. The razor-thin margin between Obama and Clinton remains in question at this hour after ballot boxes were discovered to have been kept overnight, uncounted, at the home of a party official; voters faced long lines at the polls; and some 17,000 voters (11% versus 4% in the last caucus) were forced to vote on provisional ballots. NPR had reported on Thursday that the state's Democratic party, which ran the election, as opposed to the state itself, had decided to do a full recount of all ballots. Tonight, though, John Gideon informs us the report was incorrect, and only "all qualified provisional ballots" are set to be counted by officials. We had updated our previous story several times while covering the mess, before finally noting: The most notable take-away from this story may end up not being the poorly run caucus process of the Democratic Party (as opposed to the state, which would run the general election in November), or even the "sleepover" ballot boxes. The most notable issue here may be the questions about what the hell happened to the registration rolls in New Mexico, as now maintained by the thugs and failures at voting machine company ES&S, since the last election. Remember, NM is where former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was fired because he refused to prosecute the bogus "voter fraud" charges made by the Republican Party there."

CBS: Little e-voting accountability on Super Tuesday  2/3/2008 Raw Story: "Democratic House Representative Rush D. Holt, Jr. (NJ-12) talks to CBS about the lack of accountability put on electronic voting machines whose results are impossible to verify. As California, Colorado and Florida join Ohio in plans already in place to abandon touch-screen voting machines, Rep. Holt proposes appropriating $500 million to states that wish to convert either to paper ballots, or electronic machines that also leave a paper trail. While it's too late for such a change to take place for Super Tuesday's vote, Holt would like for such an option to be available in time for the final presidential vote this November."

'Funds Ran Out': Kucinich Hand Count Stops in NH; Republican Albert Howard's NH Hand Count Set to Begin Thursday  1/23/2008 Brad Blog: "We've confirmed with Kucinich campaign rep David Bright, who was in Concord this morning, that they have indeed stopped counting as of today, after only a single county, and not even fully at that. We're trying to learn more, and will reserve full comment until we do. Suffice it to say that given the many miscounts being discovered, the horrendous shape of NH's "chain of custody", the refusal of the SoS to allow for the counting/reconciliation of unvoted (blank) ballots, the Diebold memory cards which seem to be missing and/or destroyed since the election (in violation of federal law), it would be disappointing, at best, if Kucinich failed to finish what he so appropriately began."

Speak Out Now To Protect the Integrity Of Our Democracy!  1/21/2008 John Laesch for Congress, Illinois: "Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) has introduced the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008". This act will help election authorities using e-voting to convert to paper ballots, offer emergency paper ballots or convert audits by hand counts. We want to make sure that every vote is counted, that every election result is verifiable. According to Holt, there are six states that have no verifiable paper trail and counties in 16 other states have the same problem. That means 20 states cannot fully verify their votes in the primaries or the November Presidential election. This is no way to run a Democracy. This legislation needs to be passed immediately to protect our elections! Our democracy can only be as strong as the integrity of our elections. It is critical that we support Rep. Holt?s legislation. Citizens need to know that their vote will be counted, and that they can trust our electoral process. The one click form below will send your personal message to all your government representatives selected below, with the subject "Pass The Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008." At the same time you can send your personal comments only as a letter to the editor of your nearest local daily newspaper if you like."

Md. to abandon touch-screen voting  1/18/2008 AP: "The state will abandon the touch-screen voting machines that have sparked years of protests and replace the system with devices that permit a manual recount. Maryland purchased the machines in the wake of the 2000 Florida election. They have been criticized as unreliable and susceptible to tampering. Gov. Martin O'Malley has proposed $6.8 million to buy optical-scan machines, which can read paper ballots filled in by voters with pencil or pen. But the new machines will not be available until 2010. That's too late for this year's presidential primary or general election."

Hillary Clinton's Dirty Campaign Tactics  1/14/2008 Alternet: "But on the ground in the presidential season's opening states, there is a darker narrative: that Hillary Clinton will not just fight hard, but fight dirty, to win. And her tactic of choice is attempting to suppress the votes of her rival's supporters. The latest example is from Nevada, where the Nevada State Education Association is widely seen as filing a suit on Clinton's behalf to stop Las Vegas' most powerful union, Culinary Workers Local 226, from caucusing inside downtown casinos after the union endorsed Barack Obama. The tactic foments a split along racial and class lines in arguably the strongest union city in America."

Voter ID Scam Is the Real Fraud  1/14/2008 Baltimore Sun: "The GOP-led campaign to pass stringent voter ID laws is a greater injustice than the prosecutions of the Jena Six, more significant than the incarceration of Michael Vick, more damaging than the insulting rants of Don Imus. This is a frankly brazen effort to block the votes of thousands of people of color who might have the temerity to vote for Democrats. And it’s un-American. As happened in several states, including Georgia, the then-GOP-dominated Indiana legislature pushed through a rigid law in 2005 requiring state-sponsored photo IDs at the ballot box. While the Republican spin machine has worked mightily to portray this as an effort to curb voter fraud, it is no such thing. There has never - never - been a single case of “voter impersonation” at the ballot box, with a fake voter using an electric bill or phone bill to pretend to be a valid voter."

European press: It wasn't a miracle - Hillary won via a rigged vote  1/14/2008 Global Research: "The mainstream Italian media are reporting both the rigging of the New Hampshire primary for Senator Hillary Clinton and the official demands for a swift, accurate and impartial recount. In an article written by Marcello Foa, one of Europe's most respected journalists, it appears that vote tallies for all Democratic candidates as well as Republicans were reduced by Diebold vote-counting machines. In an analysis of the hand-counted ballots, the influential Milanese newspaper - Il Giornale, reports that all Democratic candidates except Senator Hillary Clinton made gains when the New Hampshire ballots were manually tabulated, while Senator Clinton made inexplicably large gains where ballots were tabulated by computerized scanners. According to the report, Ron Paul should have finished third in the Republican primary rather than fifth. Thus, it would appear that both Barack Obama and Ron Paul were the primary targets of vote-rigging operations in New Hampshire."

On top of all the NH vote anomalies, this is the WHOPPER  1/11/2008 Buzzflash: "Analysts at the Election Defense Alliance (EDA) have confirmed that based on the official results on the New Hampshire Secretary of state web site, there is a remarkable relationship between Obama and Clinton votes, when you compare votes tabulated by op-scan v. votes tabulated by hand: The percentages are exactly opposite and match to within .0001%. Optical Scan Clinton 91,717 52.9507% Obama 81,495 47.0493% Total 173,212 Hand Counted Clinton 20,889 47.0494% Obama 23,509 52.9506% Total 44,398"

More Questions About Diebold Voting Machines - Did Hillary Really Win New Hampshire?  1/11/2008 Counterpunch: "That is what some people are wondering, after looking closely at the totals in the votes for surprise Democratic primary victor Hillary Clinton, and for Barack Obama, who placed instead of winning as all the polls had predicted he would. And thanks to candidate Dennis Kucinich, we are likely to find out. Kucinich today filed a request, and a required $2000 fee, to order up a manual recount of the machine ballots cast in the state."

The Voter ID Fraud  1/11/2008 The Nation: "The case is called Crawford v. Marion County Election Board. It tests an Indiana statute, passed in 2005, requiring voters to present a government-issued ID before they can cast a ballot. The law is aimed at alleged fraudulent voting by unregistered or noncitizen voters. Republicans insist that these voters pose a major problem, despite the fact that every systematic study of the question has concluded that this kind of fraud–called “voter impersonation”–is all but unknown in the United States right now. In fact, authorities in Indiana could not point to a single case of voter impersonation in the state’s history."

Kucinich stepping into trap …  1/10/2008 Black Box Voting: ""We have no control over the ballot chain of custody and we have learned the pain from the 2004 Nader recount, in which only 11 districts were counted, chosen by a highly questionable person, and then nothing showed up. Now all we hear is how the Nader recount validated the machines." As Tobi says, "A candidate asking for a recount may well be a tool used to 'prove' everything was okay and then that candidate will be further discredited." I'll go further than that. The only way a recount makes any sense at all in New Hampshire is AFTER an assessment is made of the chain of custody issues. If the chain of custody isn't intact the recount won't be worth a cup of warm spit."
