Ohio Voters tell of Election Day Troubles at Hearing  11/14/2004 Common Dreams

Did lawyer-observers on Election Day miss fraud incidents?  11/14/2004 Hartford Courant: "And by my presence, along with other Democratic lawyers, I lent an air of legitimacy to the voting process, which, by and large, seemed fair enough. But one thing troubled me: who was checking to make sure the data contained in the digital memory cards actually matched the voters’ intentions marked on the paper ballots?"

Ghosts of Florida  11/14/2004 Intelligence Squad: "Tom Grayman was in Jacksonville, Florida on Election Day 2004 and observed the administration of the vote in that heavily-African-American city. He has recently been interviewed on the topic of the 2004 election on Air America Radio’s "The Al Franken Show;" on "BET Nightly News;" and on NPR, Pacifica, commercial, and community radio stations in such markets as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, Atlanta, Boston, St. Louis, and Washington, DC."

Dirty work at Philly polls  11/14/2004 OnLine Journal: "In Philadelphia, the Republican Party hired local people including down-and-out addicts as neighborhood poll watchers, paid the poll watchers to challenge their neighbors' voting, and sent visiting teams of burly enforcers in window-tinted vans in a mixed strategy of intimidation, pay and misinformation to suppress voting on November 2, according to a Brooklyn law student who worked as a poll monitor."

Ellen Theisen, a software technical writer who works out of her home in Port Ludlow, co-founded VotersUnite!, another national watchdog group, in April. She did so after learning about direct recording electronic, or DRE, voting machines, which lack a voter-verified paper trail."

A Legitimate Recount Effort in Ohio  11/12/2004 Alternet: "Common Cause of Ohio and the Alliance for Democracy, a progressive coalition, Thursday announced they were launching a recount campaign for Ohio. Columbus, Ohio attorney Cliff Arnebeck, who represents both groups, said both the Green Party and Libertarian Party presidential candidates would seek a recount if the $110,000 filing fee could be raised. "Common Cause and the Alliance for Democracy are not partisan. The purpose of the recount is to verify the honesty of the process," Arnebeck said. As the number of voters grew by as much as 50 percent in some precincts, according to pro-Kerry field organizers, the number of voting machines on Election Day shrank by a third. Precincts that usually had five machines only had three. The lack of voting machines was a disaster."

Rule by Theft: Reconstructing the Crime  11/11/2004 Black Commentator: "Conyers is compelled to go through the motions of requesting help from the General Accounting Office, which is obligated to assist the Congress in carrying out its duties. However, the true engines of resistance to Bush’s crime accompli are the grassroots investigators, technicians and numbers crunchers busily in search of patterns of anomalies in the corrupted election returns – numbers that should not be there – and answers to how the tallies might have been engineered. These are the people who will craft the technical indictment against the Bush men. Bev Harris is at the center of the rebellion. On Monday she renewed her call for “lawyers, computer people, statisticians” and “funds to pay for copies of the evidence.” For non-specialists, Harris has other assignments."

Vote Theft Round 2: And so the sorting and discarding of Kerry votes begins  11/11/2004 OpEd News: "Are the provisional ballots in Ohio being thrown out? A new rule for counting provisional ballots in Cuyahoga County, Ohio was implemented on Tuesday, November 9 at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon, according to election observer Victoria Lovegren. The new ruling in Cuyahoga County mandates that provisional ballots in yellow packets must be 'Rejected' if there is no 'date of birth' on the packet. The Free Press obtained copies of the original 'Provisional Verification Procedure' from Cuyahoga County which stated 'Date of birth is not mandatory and should not reject a provisional ballot.' The original procedure required the voter's name, address and a signature that matched the signature in the county's database."

Fighting for fair elections is fundamental not just for the future, but for the present. Bush won no mandate."

Activists demand election probe  11/11/2004 SF Examiner: "Citing uncounted provisional ballots, faulty voting systems and racially based voter suppression, about 60 people rallied outside the federal building Wednesday to call for an investigation into last week's presidential election. Organizers said similar demonstrations in other U.S. cities were taking place this week. Chanting "Count every vote, every vote counts," the demonstrators spoke out against what they called systematic voter suppression, specifically in low income and African-American-dominated precincts in swing states."

Who Counts in Ohio?  11/11/2004 Truth Out: "To make Kerry's odds even tougher, the man running the game - Secretary of State Ken Blackwell -also co-chairs the Ohio committee to re-elect George Bush. A former mayor of Cincinnati, Undersecretary of HUD, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Blackwell is one of the national GOP's most prominent African-American officials and a leading candidate to replace Bob Taft as Governor of Ohio. More to the point, he publicly spearheaded Republican efforts in the state to reduce the number of his fellow African-Americans whose votes would go to the Democrats In some cases, the courts over-ruled him, and - much to their credit - most black voters stood up to his harassing tactics. But Blackwell never stopped trying. As chief election officer, he decreed that voters, if challenged, could cast provisional ballots only at their correct precinct. Previously, they could vote anywhere in the county in which they were registered. When a lower court over-ruled him, he appealed the decision and got his restriction reinstated. This might, in part, explain why Ohio now has some 100,000 fewer provisional ballots than many Democrats expected."

VOTING MACHINES AND THE UNDERESTIMATE OF THE BUSH VOTE  11/10/2004 CalTech: "1. A series of claims have been made in recent days alleging that discrepancies between exit poll results and the presidential vote in certain states provides evidence of malfeasance in those states. These claims seem to be concentrated on states using electronic voting systems. 2. Exit polls predicted a significantly greater vote for Kerry nationwide than the official returns confirmed, but there is not any apparent systematic bias when we take this same analysis to the state level. 3. Analysis of deviations between the exit polls and the official returns show no particular patterns for states using electronic voting; nor does this analysis reveal any patterns for states using other forms of voting systems. 4. We conclude that there is no evidence, based on exit polls, that electronic voting machines were used to steal the 2004 election for President Bush."

Voter Intimidation in Tampa - Dispatches from the Gound  11/10/2004 Counterpunch: "Florida law requires Spanish-speaking poll workers in this precinct. Even the journalists are pretty horrified. My source said they've also been forbidden to talk about it even on their own time, and he was calling from somewhere else. He was trying to figure out how to get the real news out on vote fraud. This is a person I've worked with off and on for nearly two years, and the voice was so somber it really bothered me. At any rate -- and perhaps, especially important due to the tipoff above, there are things you can do to take back America."

Diebold, electronic voting and the vast right-wing conspiracy  11/10/2004 Free Press: published 2/04, very informative - "In the early 1980s, brothers Bob and Todd Urosevich founded ES&S’s originator, Data Mark. The brothers Urosevich obtained financing from the far-Right Ahmanson family in 1984, which purchased a 68% ownership stake, according to the Omaha World Herald. After brothers William and Robert Ahmanson infused Data Mark with new capital, the name was changed to American Information Systems (AIS). California newspapers have long documented the Ahmanson family’s ties to right-wing evangelical Christian and Republican circles. In 2001, the Los Angeles Times reported, “. . . primarily funded by evangelical Christians – particularly the wealthy Ahmanson family of Irvine – the [Discovery] institute’s $1-million annual program has produced 25 books, a stream of conferences and more than 100 fellowships for doctoral and postdoctoral research.” The chief philanthropists of the Discovery Institute, that pushes creationist science and education in California, are Howard and Roberta Ahmanson. According to Group Watch, in the 1980s Howard F. Ahmanson, Jr. was a member of the highly secretive far-Right Council for National Policy, an organization that included Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North, Major General John K. Singlaub and other Iran-Contra scandal notables, as well as former Klan members like Richard Shoff. Ahmanson, heir to a savings and loan fortune, is little reported on in the mainstream U.S. press. But, English papers like The Independent are a bit more forthcoming on Ahmanson’s politics."

Countdown - Keith Olbermann  11/10/2004 MSNBC: "“There was litigation over pockets of voters,” he continued, on the subject of Ohio. “There was far more litigation than was indicated in the news programming.” He should know - he was on the clock and on the set working for CBS News throughout the campaign, and straight through to 6 AM in the hours after the vote. “So when you look at provisionals and absentees and then those pockets of votes, yeah, there probably is enough of a margin if things broke for Kerry that he could turn the state. Is it likely? No. But it is not impossible.”"

Votergate 2004; We Don't Need Paper to Prove Fraud, But We Do Need Money and Leadership, NOW.  11/10/2004 OpEd News: "As a former C.P.A and auditor, I have used statistical sampling throughout my career with great confidence. With electronic record keeping, it's easy to create a program to falsify the books. But there are ways to uncover that. Auditors have developed statistical ways to cut right through corruption in companies. You don't even need a paper trail. These statistical approaches can be used with almost 100% accuracy to uncover fraud. With the votergate 2004 it's a numbers game just like it is with corporate accounting, even easier. All you're talking about is one number-- total votes for each candidate."

Most provisional ballots rejected; voters often in wrong precinct  11/10/2004 Palm Beach Post, FL: "The vast majority of provisional ballots — voters' last chance to have their voices heard — were rejected, a review of the presidential election results from across the state found."

The Elephant in the Voting Booth  11/9/2004 Buzzflash: "Citing concerns about potential terrorism, Warren County officials locked down the county administration building on election night and blocked anyone from observing the vote count as the nation awaited Ohio's returns. County officials say they took the action Tuesday night for homeland security, although state elections officials said they didn't know of any other Ohio county that closed off its elections board. Media organizations protested, saying it violated the law and the public's rights. None dare call it voter suppression and fraud  11/7/2004 Free Press: "The day after his concession, Kerry drew 3,893 votes closer to Bush when a computerized voting machine “glitch” was discovered in an Ohio precinct. A machine in ward 1B in the predominantly Republican Gahanna, Ohio, recorded 4,258 votes for George W. Bush when only 638 people cast votes at the New Life Church polling site. Buried on page A6 of the Columbus Dispatch, the story also reported that the voting machine recorded 0 votes in a race between Franklin County Commissioners Arlene Shoemaker and Paula Brooks. Franklin County Board of Elections Director Matt Damschroder told the Dispatch that the voting machine glitches were “why the results on election night are unofficial.” The right-wing New Life Church voting glitch is interesting. The evidence included videotape of the League of Women voters tampering with ballots in a close door vote "counting" session. The women were illegally punching holes in already cast ballots."

Did Republicans steal the Florida election by rigging optical-scan voting machines?  11/6/2004 Blue Bunny: "So, after wrestling with this issue for three days, I've concluded: The exit polls were actually wrong. The odd-looking Florida numbers are easily explained by the fact that many southern Democrats are Democrats in name only and increasingly vote for Republican candidates. What is not in doubt is the fact that the Republicans carried out a number of schemes to suppress voter turnout in traditional Democratic constituencies, particularly the African-American community. It is difficult to tell just how successful these despicable measures were, but the possibility remains that they determined the election's outcome. Once African-Americans vote, their votes may not be counted, due to high rates of ballot "spoilage" in low-income African-American election districts. In other words, the system itself suppresses the African-American vote."

Evidence Mounts That The Vote Was Hacked  11/6/2004 Common Dream: "According to congressional candidate Fisher, it makes far more sense that the exit polls were right - they weren't done on Diebold PCs - and that the vote itself was hacked. And not only for the presidential candidate - Jeff Fisher thinks this hit him and pretty much every other Democratic candidate for national office in the most-hacked swing states. So far, the only national "mainstream" media to come close to this story was Keith Olbermann on his show Friday night, November 5th, when he noted that it was curious that all the voting machine irregularities so far uncovered seem to favor Bush. In the meantime, the Washington Post and other media are now going through single-bullet-theory-like contortions to explain how the exit polls had failed."

The two-year battle fought by Dennis Hastert and Tom DeLay to keep it from coming to a vote, thus insuring that there will be no possible audit of the votes of about a third of the 2004 electorate, has fueled the flames of conspiracy theorists convinced Republican ideologues – now known to be willing to lie in television advertising – would extend their "ends justifies the means" morality to stealing the vote "for the better good of the country" they think single-party Republican rule will bring."

Why; to concede the election, of course, despite their avowal to ensure that all the votes would be counted. This sure-lose strategy came on the heels of an abysmal failure on the part of the Kerry campaign, the Democratic Party and the Democratic Leadership Council to throw resources into voter registration and turnout projects, until Black leaders threw a series of fits in the closing weeks of the election and the party hacks relented - a day late and a dollar short."

Should America Trust the Results of the Election?  11/5/2004 Washington Dispatch: "Members of the discussion forum, dug in and have already found a clear error in the vote count within Ohio. In one voting precinct in Gahanna, Ohio, 4,258 voters supposedly cast an electronic ballot for George Bush while only 260 voted for John Kerry. While it is vaguely possible that over 94% of voters in the precinct supported George W. Bush, it is a hard number to believe considering that only 638 voters were counted at the polling center. The Columbus Dispatch has investigated the matter and the director of the board of elections within the county admitted that Bush only received 365 votes. He stated that a "glitch" occurred in the electronic voting machine during the vote tally. This glitch could have given nearly 4,000 fake votes to George Bush if it had not discovered. The Gahanna incident is just one confirmed mistake and was discovered by activists on the Internet."

House Dems Seek Election Inquiry  11/5/2004 Wired: "In their letter, representatives John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, Jerrold Nadler of New York and Robert Wexler of Florida asked the GAO to "immediately undertake an investigation of the efficacy of voting machines and new technologies used in the 2004 election, how election officials responded to difficulties they encountered and what we can do in the future to improve our election systems and administration." John Doty, spokesman for Nadler, said the congressmen emphasized that they were not seeking a nationwide recount and were not anticipating that an investigation would change the outcome of the election. "But we do want to make sure that where there are problems they're fixed so that it won't affect other elections in the future," Doty said. "We want to make sure that people can be confident in the system." "

Computer Scientists Cautious of E-Voting  11/4/2004 AP: "Computer scientists reserved judgment. Many acknowledged that the hardware performed well. But software errors may have changed results, they said. The vast majority of touch screens in the United States do not produce paper records. And that means, critics say, that the machines could alter or delete ballots without anyone noticing. "What has most concerned scientists are problems that are not observable, so the fact that no major problems were observed says nothing about the system," said David Jefferson, a computer scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. "The fact that we had a relatively smooth election yesterday does not change at all the vulnerability these systems have to fraud or bugs." "

No. Politics is a high-stakes game, and the history of voting manipulation is long and sometimes colorful. But today it can be done quietly from a remote keyboard, and essentially transparent without exit polling data or audit capability."

First of all, this election was definitely rigged  11/4/2004 Salon: "Talk to anyone from a real democracy -- from Canada or any European country or India. They are staggered to discover that 80 percent of our touch-screen electronic voting machines have no paper trail and are manufactured by companies owned by Bush Republicans. Kerry Won  11/4/2004 Tom Paine: by Greg Palast - "Bush won Ohio by 136,483 votes. Typically in the United States, about 3 percent of votes cast are voided—known as “spoilage” in election jargon—because the ballots cast are inconclusive. Palast’s investigation suggests that if Ohio’s discarded ballots were counted, Kerry would have won the state. Today, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports there are a total of 247,672 votes not counted in Ohio, if you add the 92,672 discarded votes plus the 155,000 provisional ballots."

More than 4,500 North Carolina votes lost because of mistake in voting machine capacity  11/4/2004 USA Today: "More than 4,500 votes have been lost in one North Carolina county because officials believed a computer that stored ballots electronically could hold more data than it did. Scattered other problems may change results in races around the state. Officials said UniLect Corp., the maker of the county's electronic voting system, told them that each storage unit could handle 10,500 votes, but the limit was actually 3,005 votes."

Supreme Disenfranchisement  11/3/2004 Alternet: "Indeed, in Bush v. Gore, the Supreme Court wrote, "the individual citizen has no federal constitutional right to vote" in presidential elections (Bush, 531 U.S. at 104) Moreover, in Bush v. Gore, the court was emphatic that state legislatures have the power to bypass the popular vote and select presidential electors. "The State legislature's power to select the manner of appointing electors is plenary; it may, if it so chooses, select the electors itself." (Bush, 531 U.S. at 104) That's the nightmare scenario of 2004. As millions of Americans join the new democracy movement, the Supreme Court has given this opening to the Republican Party: if Tuesday's vote is disruptive enough – polls not closing on time, allegations of voter fraud, lawsuits, perhaps violence by frustrated voters – then legislatures in the disputed states can come in and appoint its own electors. The popular vote would not matter."

Election 2004: "Sour Grapes" or Voter Fraud  11/3/2004 Buzzflash: "The unprecedented high turnout coupled with new registrations (that were overwhelmingly in favor of John Kerry) suggest that there was foul play at the voting booths. As a result, consumer investigator and activist Bev Harris (founder of Black Box Voting) "is conducting the largest Freedom of Information action in history. On election night, Black Box Voting blanketed the US with the first in a series of public records requests, to obtain internal computer logs and other documents from 3,000 individual counties and townships." ...The fact of the matter is (as every reasonable person who hasn't been hoodwinked by the pageantry of election night fraud realizes) that the election was stolen again in full view of the American public. The Republican owned voting machines prevailed over exit poll projections and the will of the American people."

The Case For Fraud  11/3/2004 Counterbias: "Logic tells us that about half the exit polls would show "false positives" for the Republican side. But in the past two presidential elections, they have almost always (should I strike out the word "almost"?) delivered "false positives" for Democrats only. The simplest explanation: The Democratic "false positives" are not, in fact, false. The computerized tally is false."

The Ghost Votes in the Machine Voting Snafus Across the Nation  11/3/2004 Counterpunch: "A non-partisan coalition monitoring problems at polling sites has reported failures of electronic votig machines around the United States - some of which recorded touch screen votes for candidates voters had not selected. While errors were resolved in the cases brought to the attention of poll watchers, many voters remain uncertain whether their proper vote was cast in a bitterly contested election in which President George Bush has claimed victory. A number of people who thought they were voting for Kerry, when the screen came up it showed they were voting for Bush," said Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) which is a member of the coalition. "We've seen it across several voting systems, not just one machine." ...As of November 3rd, members of the Election Protection Coalition received 4,459 reports of ballot problems, 2,867 calls about polling place irregularities, and 7,152 complaints regarding voter registration glitches. Another 1,074 people phoned in to say that they had witnessed voter intimidation. Unlike the voting problems that occurred during the 2000 elections, the voting problems reported during the 2004 election were spread across the entire country and aggravated the long lines voters endured at polling places. The group Common Cause also reported 50,000 calls reporting voting problems to its election hot-line, although not all the complaints were related to e-voting problems."

Presidential Votes Miscast on E-Voting Machines Across the Country  11/2/2004 Kansas City InfoZine: "Voters from at least half a dozen states reported that touch-screen voting machines had incorrectly recorded their choices, including for president. Voters discovered the problems when checking the review screen at the end of the voting process. They found, to their surprise, that the machines indicated that they voted for one candidate when they had voted for another. When voters tried to correct the problem, the machine often made the same error several times. While in most cases the situation was reportedly resolved, many voters remain uneasy about whether the proper vote was ultimately cast. Meanwhile, voting experts are concerned that other voters are experiencing the problem, but failing to notice that the machine is indicating the wrong choice on the "summary" screen."

AN ELECTION SPOILED ROTTEN  11/1/2004 Greg Palast: "John Kerry is down by several thousand votes in New Mexico, though not one ballot has yet been counted. He's also losing big time in Colorado and Ohio; and he's way down in Florida, though the votes won't be totaled until Tuesday night. Through a combination of sophisticated vote rustling—ethnic cleansing of voter rolls, absentee ballots gone AWOL, machines that "spoil" votes—John Kerry begins with a nationwide deficit that could easily exceed one million votes."
