Staten Island Residents Refused to Help Black Mom as Sandy Swept Sons Away  11/2/2012 Color Lines: "According to the sister, a dripping-wet Moore banged on doors looking for help in the middle of the hurricane, but couldn’t find anyone willing to help her. “They answered the door and said, ‘I don’t know you. I’m not going to help you,’” said the sister. “My sister’s like 5-foot-3, 130 pounds. She looks like a little girl. She’s going to come to you and you’re going to slam the door in her face and say, ‘I don’t know you, I can’t help you’?’” Moore spent the night huddled on a doorstep as the hurricane’s assault continued. At daybreak, her sister said, the desperate mother walked until she found a police car and related her heart-breaking story."

The Cleveland Uppercut, Lil Reese and Camera Phone Savagery  10/29/2012 Color Lines: "Back in 2000, before online media became the media, collector James Allen published a book of lynching postcards from the 1900s called Without Sanctuary. Throughout the volume, you can see mobs of white men, women and children gazing at the burned, castrated and hanged bodies of black men. When I read this book 12 years ago, I couldn’t fathom how human beings could watch, photograph and celebrate such savagery. I couldn’t understand how one could smell those smells, gawk at those corpses and then buy and mail a souvenir of the experience to a friend or family member. It was just too fucking sick. Now I do understand. Armed with camera phones, social media platforms and comments sections, we have all become the watchers, the photographers, the celebrants and the distributors of gendered violence. The only thing we’re missing are the postcards."

A Question for Anti-Choicers: How, Exactly, Would Your Rape Exception Work?  10/18/2012 RH Reality Check: "If efforts to criminalize abortion succeeded, would it be a medical, legal, or theological authority that would make the determination as to whether a woman qualified to have the banned procedure? If I was raped, would I have to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, or might a preponderance of the evidence standard suffice? Would I make my case to a doctor? A judge? A police officer? An ethics committee?"

On Sapelo Island, Another Case Study in How Black Exploitation Fuels Wealth  10/1/2012 Color Lines: "Those descendants—the Geechee of Sapelo Island, Georgia—stand to lose their once “invaluable” land for the same reason that most traditional black and brown cultures have: someone else has noticed that a profit can be made by taking it."

Advanced Placement: Chicago Teachers Poised to Lead in the Next School-Reform Fights  9/20/2012 Common Dreams

Wednesday  9/19/2012

Mayor Rahm-Ney’s Attack on the Chicago Teachers Union  9/19/2012 Democracy Now: "Unions are under attack in the United States—not only from people like Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, but now, with the teachers strike in Chicago, from the very core of President Barack Obama’s inner circle, his former chief of staff and current mayor of that city, Rahm Emanuel."

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis: Deal Ending Strike a Victory for Education  9/19/2012 Democracy Now: "Chicago public school teachers are returning to the classroom today nine days after launching their first strike in a quarter century. On Tuesday, 800 delegates of the Chicago Teachers Union voted overwhelmingly to suspend the strike to put an agreement with the city before the entire membership. The deal calls for a double-digit salary increase over the next three years, including raises for cost of living, while maintaining other increases for experience and advanced education. Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis joins us to talk about the strike, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and what this means for education reform across the country. "We’ve been micromanaged into doing things that we know are harmful for children," Lewis says."

Arctic Sea Ice Melt May Trigger Extreme European Winter  9/17/2012 Wired: "Polar ice experts “thought that it would be many years until we again saw anything like we saw in 2007?, said Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado. The unprecedented expanse of ice-free Arctic Ocean has been absorbing the 24-hour sun over the short polar summer. The heat in the water must be released into the atmosphere if the ice is to re-form this autumn. “This is like a new energy source for the atmosphere,” said Francis. This heat and water vapour will affect the all-important jet stream – the west-to-east winds that are the boundary between cold Arctic and the warm mid-latitudes. Others researchers have already shown that the jet stream has been shifting northwards in recent years. Francis and colleagues have recently documented that the jet stream is also slowing down."

9/11 Stunner: Bush Received, Ignored Multiple Warnings of 'Imminent', 'Dramatic' Attack  9/10/2012 Brad Blog: "As a side note, it says quite a bit about today's New York Times that they decided to run this as an "Op-Ed". In any event, please read it, and keep it in mind when you hear the lie yet again, on this latest anniversary of the horrific 9/11 tragedy and beyond, that "Bush kept us safe.""

The Deafness Before the Storm  9/10/2012 NYT: "But some in the administration considered the warning to be just bluster. An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day."

US is the Worst Police State in the World – By the Numbers  8/31/2012 Common Dreams: "There’s no getting around the fact that the United States is the Mother of All Police States. China can’t compete in the incarceration business. With four times the U.S. population, it imprisons only 70 percent as many people – about the same number as the non-white prison population of the U.S. Even worse, 80,000 U.S. inmates undergo the torture of solitary confinement on any given day."

5 LAPD Officers Investigated in Death of Woman  8/31/2012 AP: "Green confirmed to the Times that during the struggle to get Thomas into the back of the patrol car, a female officer threatened to kick Thomas in the genitals and then did so. Once Thomas was in the car, the video showed her breathing shallowly until she drew her last breath."

New Judge Assigned in Trayvon Martin Case  8/30/2012 AP: "Attorney Mark O'Mara had asked the court earlier this month to overturn Lester's decision not to leave the case. O'Mara contended that the judge made disparaging remarks about Zimmerman's character and advocated for additional charges against him in setting his $1 million bond in July. Two judges on a three-judge appeals panel agreed in an opinion issued Wednesday."

Many Years Too Late, the Black Caucus Turns on Artur Davis  8/28/2012 Black Agenda Report: "Former Alabama congressman Artur Davis’ name is mud with Black Democrats, for speaking to the Republican National Convention. They say he’s flip flopped on his old “progressive” policies. But Davis “was always among the worst, most right-wing members of the Congressional Black Caucus.” That’s why the Rahm Emanuel-Barack Obama wing of the party once considered him a “friend.”"

Katrina Pain Index 2012: 7 Years After  8/24/2012 Countercurrents: "1 Rank of New Orleans, Louisiana in world prison rate. Louisiana imprisons more of its people, per head, than any of the other 50 states. Louisiana rate is five times higher than Iran, 13 times higher than China and 20 times Germany. In Louisiana, one in 86 adults is in prison. In New Orleans, one in 14 black men is behind bars. In New Orleans, one of every seven black men is in prison, on parole or on probation."

Where’s the evidence Aoki was FBI informant?  8/24/2012 SF Bay View: "Rosenfeld cites only one FBI document … [It refers to SF T-2, but] T symbols are used to refer to informants or technical sources of information (microphones, wiretaps). So was Aoki the informer or the one being observed?"

L.A. police accused of targeting, beating black skateboarder  8/23/2012 Reuters: "Part of the confrontation was captured on a cell phone video by an onlooker. The clip, which has been broadcast on television and the Internet, shows Weekley sprawled face down on a patch of grass outside his apartment as four officers pin him to the ground and one punches him in the face. Weekley, a student at Xavier University in Louisiana, said he was grabbed by the hair and punched repeatedly by an officer while handcuffed. Weekley said he suffered a broken nose and cheekbone and has been restricted to a liquid diet since then."

Council OK’s disputed remap of Boston districts Critics say plan slights minorities; Mayor’s backing is uncertain  8/22/2012 Boston Globe: "The most controversial change centered on District 2. South Boston is the heart of the district, but, historically, it has included Chinatown and swaths of the South End. Under the new map, District 2 absorbs the section of downtown around City Hall. But heavily minority neighborhoods in the southern part of the district are jettisoned, instead becoming part of Dorchester’s District 3. And two precincts in the South End are shifted to District 7 in Roxbury."

Southern-style justice in 2012?  8/22/2012 Final Call: "But while the report lists details and reaches conclusions, there are still some things missing as noted by Memphis attorney Benjamin Irwin, who represents the deceased young man’s family. In an interview on CNN, the attorney said it was important to note that the report essentially offers a medical conclusion, which includes saying the gun was next to the young man’s head and a gun caused the death. But, he continued, the report doesn’t reach a conclusion about who fired the weapon that killed Chavis. It also is not known whether Chavis was tested for gun residue or if officers were tested for gun residue and when, Attorney Irvin added."

Arkansas medical examiner rules death of handcuffed suspect a suicide  8/20/2012 CNN: ""At the time of discharge, the muzzle of the gun was placed against the right temporal scalp," the crime lab's report states. Police said they discovered a .380-caliber Cobra semi-automatic pistol when the found Carter's body slumped over. Many people in Jonesboro were skeptical about the shooting, as was Carter's mother. "I think they killed him," Theresa Carter told CNN on Wednesday. "I mean, my son wasn't suicidal.""

Should Mormon Church Apologize for Ban on Blacks?  8/20/2012 About.com: "Turner says that Mormon leaders could explain that "their predecessors had confused their own racist views with God's will and that the priesthood ban resulted from human error and limitations rather than a divine curse." He says an apology would change the perceptions that the Mormon Church is racist and make people of color feel more comfortable with the church. An apology, however, would mean the current leadership of the church would be forced to publicly challenge the insight of previous leaders. While that would mark a huge controversy for the church, Turner says, "the abiding love and veneration most Latter-day Saints have for their leaders would readily survive a fuller reckoning with their human frailties and flaws. The Mormon people need not believe they have perfect prophets, either past or present.""

Absurd: Police Release Video with Key Section Missing in Suspicious Arkansas Slay  8/19/2012 PlayaHata: "To explain stops in the video, he said the camera system in both patrol cars is controlled automatically with an emergency light bar and siren system. “After the light bar is turned off the camera system ends its recording,” Waterworth said in a statement. He didn’t respond to email and phone messages seeking further comment."

Why Race Is Still a Problem for Mormons  8/18/2012 NYT: "Mormonism wasn’t always troubled by anti-black racism. In a country deeply stained by slavery and anti-black racism, the church, founded by Joseph Smith in 1830, was noteworthy for its relative racial egalitarianism. Smith episodically opposed slavery and tolerated the priesthood ordination of black men, at least one of whom, Elijah Abel, occupied a position of minor authority. It was Smith’s successor, Brigham Young, who adopted the policies that now haunt the church. He described black people as cursed with dark skin as punishment for Cain’s murder of his brother."

Is Washington Deaf As Well as Criminal? Stumbling Towards Nuclear War?  8/18/2012 Counterpunch: by PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS - "Here is Russian president Medvedev (currently the prime minister) describing the steps toward nuclear war that Russia has taken pushed by the crazed warmongers in Washington wallowing in their insane hubris: With regard to the american missile bases on Russia’s borders, “I have made the following decisions. First, I am instructing the Defense Ministry to immediately put the missile attack early warning radar station in Kaliningrad on combat alert. Second, protective cover of Russia’s strategic nuclear weapons will be reinforced as a priority measure under the program to develop our air and space defenses. Third, the new strategic ballistic missiles commissioned by the Strategic Missile Forces and the Navy will be equipped with advanced missile defense penetration systems and new highly-effective warheads. Fourth, I have instructed the Armed Forces to draw up measures for disabling missile defense system data and guidance systems. These measures will be adequate, effective, and low-cost. Fifth, if the above measures prove insufficient, the Russian Federation will deploy modern offensive weapon systems in the west and south of the country, ensuring our ability to take out any part of the US missile defense system in Europe. One step in this process will be to deploy Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad Region. Other measures to counter the European missile defense system will be drawn up and implemented as necessary. Furthermore, if the situation continues to develop not to Russia’s favor, we reserve the right to discontinue further disarmament and arms control measures.”

Wall Street’s Africa Land Grab  8/15/2012 Color Lines: "The nation’s financial sector is on a crusade to dominate an irreplaceable African resource that the world increasingly needs: massive tracts of open land available for large scale industrial farming. The pace of land purchases is flying so furiously that it is now commonly referred to as “a land grab.”"

Boston's Logan Airport 'Rife' with Racial Profiling: Report  8/12/2012 Common Dreams: "According to the complaints, the officers said their co-workers increasingly target minorities in a "behavior detection program" instituted in Logan after 9/11. The behavior detection program in place in Boston uses specially trained behavioral “assessors” to scan the lines of passengers and interact with them to assess unusual activity; however, according to the complaints, the operation has become a magnet for racial profiling, targeting not only Middle Easterners but also blacks, Hispanics and other minorities, the Times reports."

Alan Blueford would have graduated in June  8/10/2012 SF Bay View: "It was the Oakland community that ultimately identified Blueford’s shooter. He turned out to be former military man Miguel Masso, who lived more than 100 miles outside the city. Officer Masso was discovered to have shot himself in the foot and to have received treatment for his injury even as young Alan Blueford was left on the ground for four hours to die. Alan’s parents were not informed of his death until six hours after the shooting and two hours after they arrived at the police station to inquire after their son. The family is now joined by members of the clergy, labor unions – SEIU 1021, ILWU – Occupy Oakland, Dignity and Resistance, International Socialist Organization and Oakland residents in demanding justice for Alan Blueford."

Damien Hooper: The sanctioning of an anti-racist Olympic rebel  8/9/2012 SF Bay View: "He’s also a threat to be sent home by the Australian Olympic Committee. Before fighting Browne, the 20-year-old’s ring attire included a black T-shirt emblazoned with the Aboriginal flag. Hooper, who is of Indigenous ancestry, knew that he was breaking the Olympics “no politics rule,” which states that you can only represent your country or approved corporate sponsors. (Worth noting that these corporate sponsors include “politically neutral” entities like Dow Chemical, British Petroleum and McDonald’s.)"

Orwellian 'Parent Trigger' Laws Have Gun Aimed at Wrong Target  8/8/2012 Common Dream: "And yet most of these parents do not know that Karl Rove and his little band of Texans created NCLB with their dismay and frustration in mind, in order to replace public education, or to “blow it up a bit,” as former Assistant Secretary of Education Susan Neuman told Time Magazine in 2008. The idea, all along, was to use the tests, as Senator Judd Gregg mused in 2001 during final mark up of NCLB, to show that public schools are failing and, thus, to usher in “market solutions” and charter schools to replace the “failed” public schools."

San Francisco Mayor Ends Stop-Frisk Consideration  8/7/2012 AP: "Lee faced an outcry after telling the newspaper in June that he was considering stop and frisk. Critics say the policy encourages racial profiling, and multiple legal battles have been fought over the practice. The Black Young Democrats of San Francisco rallied last month against the move outside City Hall. The previous week, a majority of San Francisco supervisors passed a resolution opposing the idea."

Researchers Sound Alarm Over Black Student Suspensions  8/7/2012 Education Week: "Nearly one in six African-American students was suspended from school during the 2009-10 academic year, more than three times the rate of their white peers, a new analysis of federal education data has found. That compares with about one in 20 white students, researchers at the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles, based at the University of California, Los Angeles, conclude. They use data collected from about half of all school districts in the nation for that year by the U.S. Department of Education’s office for civil rights."

Say Goodbye to Social Security  8/3/2012 Counterpunch: "In a New York Times editorial (link) written in 1993 the late economist John Kenneth Galbraith made a point that seems to have been lost on subsequent generations—many in the economic elite benefit from the destitution of others. Even more to the point, activist government could put the unemployed back to work tomorrow, but at a cost to the elite. By tying economic policies long known to work to competing economic interests, Dr. Galbraith explained the current conundrum. Economies in the West aren’t working because a small economic elite benefits from this state of affairs."

The Christian Right’s Anti-Sex Campaign in Africa  8/3/2012 Counterpunch: "The Christian right’s sex war in sub-Sahara Africa is being waged on two fronts – against homosexuality and a woman’s right to control her pregnancy. It is spearheaded by an informal coalition of right-wing Roman Catholic, Mormon and Protestant evangelical groups that few have heard of. Foremost is the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ), originally founded by Pat Robertson; led by right-wing evangelicals, it operates two centers in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, encouraged the ACLJ to open an office and assist in drafting the constitution to reflect “Christian values.” Other groups promoting Christian intolerance in Africa are the Family Watch International (led by the Mormon activist, Sharon Slater), the Human Life International (a Roman Catholic group) and the World Congress of Families (an umbrella group promoting “pro-family” values)."

Macau probes Sands China over privacy breach  8/1/2012 AP: "The Chinese arm of U.S. billionaire Sheldon Adelson's gambling empire is being investigated by Macau privacy authorities over its handling of documents related to a lawsuit by its former CEO, who claims the company has links to crime bosses and encourages prostitution as part of its business strategy. Sands China Ltd. said Wednesday it was notified by Macau's privacy watchdog that an official investigation has been launched into the alleged transfer of "certain data" from the Asian gambling city to the U.S."

Obama’s Ancestor Was First American Slave  7/31/2012 About.com: "What's more, this ancestor isn't a relative of Obama's black father but of his white mother, the late Stanley Ann Dunham. "President Obama is the 11th great-grandson of John Punch, who was the first documented African to be enslaved for life in the American colonies," according to Joseph Shumway, an Ancestry.com genealogist."

Despite Overwhelming Evidence, Federal Appeals Court Upholds Law Requiring Doctors to Lie to Women  7/27/2012 Common Dreams: "As reported in the StarTribune Nation, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals found yesterday by a vote of 7 to 4 that South Dakota can require doctors to warn women that they face an increased risk of suicide if they have an abortion. The state, in supporting the law passed seven years ago, [submitted] several studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals to demonstrate a "statistically significant correlation between abortion and suicide." Planned Parenthood relied on another study to argue its belief that certain underlying factors, such as mental health issues, predispose women to have both unwanted pregnancies and suicidal tendencies. As the StarTribune notes: "The four dissenting judges said multiple studies cited failed to take into account factors such as pre-existing mental health issues, domestic violence and a young age at the time of pregnancy."

Rep. Barbara Lee and Dazon Dixon Diallo on Confronting the Overlooked AIDS Epidemic in Black America  7/25/2012 Democracy Now: “Most of the states, if not all of the states in the South, are already currently planning to not opt in on Medicaid expansion. And so, that directly speaks to the level of access to care and the coverage of medications that most people who have low income or live below the poverty level can actually afford."

Demonstrators Protest California Police Shooting  7/23/2012 AP: "Crystal Ventura, a 17-year-old who witnessed the shooting, told the Register that the man had his back to the officer. Ventura said the man was shot in the buttocks area. The man then went down on his knees, she said, adding that he was struck by another bullet in the head. Ventura said another officer handcuffed the man, who by then was on the ground and not moving. "They searched his pockets, and there was a hole in his head, and I saw blood on his face," Ventura told the newspaper."

U.S. Drug War Expands to Africa, a Newer Hub for Cartels  7/21/2012 NYT: "In a significant expansion of the war on drugs, the United States has begun training an elite unit of counternarcotics police in Ghana and planning similar units in Nigeria and Kenya as part of an effort to combat the Latin American cartels that are increasingly using Africa to smuggle cocaine into Europe."

Eugenics and the Nazis -- the California connection  7/15/2012 SF Chronicle: Published in 2003 - "Only after eugenics became entrenched in the United States was the campaign transplanted into Germany, in no small measure through the efforts of California eugenicists, who published booklets idealizing sterilization and circulated them to German officials and scientists. Hitler studied American eugenics laws. He tried to legitimize his anti- Semitism by medicalizing it, and wrapping it in the more palatable pseudoscientific façade of eugenics. Hitler was able to recruit more followers among reasonable Germans by claiming that science was on his side. Hitler's race hatred sprung from his own mind, but the intellectual outlines of the eugenics Hitler adopted in 1924 were made in America. "

Wells Fargo Settles for $175M Over Steering Blacks and Latinos to Subprime Loans  7/12/2012 Color Lines: "Wells Fargo and the Justice Department have reached a $175 million settlement agreement over charges that the bank routinely steered black and Latino borrowers into expensive, dangerous subprime home loans throughout the housing bubble. Wells Fargo has been a standout bad actor among banks, both during the subprime lending boom and the recession it spawned. Watchdogs have shown that Wells Fargo fails to maintain foreclosed properties in black and Latino communities with the same care it does in white neighborhoods, leading to further depression of home values and more blight. Its mortgage servicing arm has been at the center of complaints about banks’ refusal to work with underwater borrowers, despite massive federal incentives. And it is an industry leader among banks that are launching their own versions of payday loans, which are such significant debt traps that the Defense Department has identified them as a national security threat and Congress has barred lenders from making them to servicemembers."

Honestly, the Jobs Outlook Is Bleak Because the GOP Wants It That Way  7/9/2012 Color Lines: "Essential to each come-out-of-nowhere success story is a government focused on improving the living standards of its people. They do so through policies that have the biggest impact on employment. The number one goal is to benefit the maximum number of citizens in the shortest amount of time. Nations that do this effectively make it. Countries centered on the opposite—government-sponsored wealth transfers to the few over the benefit of the many—remain poor."

The Supreme Court’s Obamacare Ruling Fails Black Women With HIV  7/3/2012 Color Lines: "State discretion on Medicaid expansion is particularly troublesome for black women living with HIV, says C. Virginia Fields, CEO of the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS. “In [several] of the 26 states that brought the Supreme Court challenge, we have large pockets of Black women living in poverty and with AIDS: Alabama, Florida, Georgia,* Mississippi and South Carolina. We had hoped that the Medicaid expansion would allow uninsured women diagnosed with HIV to qualify for Medicaid sooner so that they would be able to receive [free or affordable] treatment before the onset of AIDS. Under the Supreme Court ruling, I doubt if there’s going to be any relaxing of those standards."

Harlem Couple Branded 'Professional Agitators' in NYPD 'Wanted' Poster  7/2/2012 DNA Info: "The NYPD has created a "wanted" poster for a Harlem couple who film cops conducting stop-and-frisks and post the videos on YouTube — branding them "professional agitators" who portray cops in a bad light and listing their home address, DNAinfo.com New York has learned. The flyer featured side-by-side mugshots of Matthew Swaye, 35, and his partner Christina Gonzalez, 25, and warned officers to be on guard against them. It was spotted by multiple people, including the couple, when it was taped to a podium outside a public hearing room in the 30th Precinct house last Thursday, where residents met for precinct council meeting."

Fear & Loathing in Texas: State Republican Party Seeks to Ban Critical Thinking in Public Schools  7/1/2012 Common Dreams: "The data suggest that the student population in Texas public schools has been a majority minority for several decades. Is it mere coincidence that this demographic shift corresponds with the adoption of neoliberal policies that have attacked and undermined equity in school finance for Texas public schools? That this corresponds with the rise of a fervent anti-intellectualism and an anti-science disposition among the Republicans that have come to dominate the Texas public school textbook adoption process?"

How the Supreme Court’s ‘Obamacare’ Ruling May Lock in Racial Inequity  6/29/2012 Color Lines: "But use of similar protocols, carrots and sticks is the way that the federal government has grown Medicaid since its implementation in 1965. Now, states are left to decide what they want to do about the ACA’s Medicaid provision without the threat of federal enforcement. And that’s a problem, particularly in the Southern, GOP-led states where huge numbers of working poor blacks and Latinos live. "

The committee’s 17 Democrats believe otherwise and voted against the contempt citation, noting that Holder’s Justice Department has turned over 7,600 documents relating to the issue that’s got Issa in a faux snit."

The New Misogyny: What It Means for Teachers and Classrooms  6/17/2012 Common Dreams: "Then, this spring’s political campaigns revealed a deep and ugly wound: misogyny that ranged from Rush Limbaugh’s crass attack on Georgetown Law School student Sandra Fluke to the repeal of Wisconsin’s pay equity law, from the Republican attacks on Title X (which subsidizes cervical and breast cancer screening, testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, and birth control for 5 million low-income women) to Virginia’s mandated vaginal ultrasounds for women who want abortions. What has been exposed is that the notion that we are “post-sexist” is a lie. There is a disturbing similarity to how the election of an African American president has masked the worsening realities for large numbers of African Americans—in the words of prison rights activist and scholar Ruth Wilson Gilmore, “One African American in the White House and a million in prison.” Professional opportunities for a narrow stratum of women have masked the worsening realities of life for millions of women caught up in the welfare system, the prison system, low-paying service jobs, domestic violence, and the ideological misogyny of growing fundamentalist religious and political perspectives."

The Stop-and-Frisk Crisis: How to Criminalize an Entire Generation of Black and Latino Men  6/15/2012 Alternet: "You have to wonder if the city actually wants us here. If so, why did the New York Police Department, in 2011, stop, question and frisk a record-breaking 684,330 black and Latino males, with 41 percent of those stop-and-frisks being youth between the ages of 14 and 24? To understand this total of 684,330 -- an increase of 14 percent from the 2010 figure --think of it like this: The number of black and Latino males detained by the NYPD in 2011 is more people than the total populations of North Dakota (672,591), Vermont (625,741), Wyoming (563,626), or America’s capital, Washington, DC (601,723). Taken together, these detainees would constitute America’s 19th largest city, nestled between Detroit, Michigan (717,777) and El Paso, Texas (649,121)."

Obama's Bold Immigration Executive Order -- What Does This Mean for the Election?  6/15/2012 Alternet: "The move puts Republicans, who are torn internally over immigration, and especially Mitt Romney, in a very uncomfortable spot. Romney has repeatedly said that hewould veto a DREAM Act, if elected president, and Kris Kobach, his hard-right immigration adviser and the author of Arizona’s notorious immigration law, has said the candidate will not support anything that gives undocumented immigrants a path to legal status. But DREAM-like policies are overwhelmingly popular. Just one-in-10 of Americans polled in a recent survey said they think that young people brought here illegally as children should not be allowed to remain in the country."

Why The Economy Can’t Get Out of First Gear: The Rich Have Sucked It Dry  6/13/2012 Common Dreams: by Robert Reich "How? We might learn something from history. During the 1920s, income concentrated at the top. By 1928, the top 1 percent was raking in an astounding 23.94 percent of the total (close to the 23.5 percent the top 1 percent got in 2007) according to analyses of tax records by my colleague Emmanuel Saez and Thomas Piketty. At that point the bubble popped and we fell into the Great Depression. But then came the Wagner Act, requiring employers to bargain in good faith with organized labor. Social Security and unemployment insurance. The Works Projects Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps. A national minimum wage. And to contain Wall Street: The Securities Act and Glass-Steagall Act. In 1941 America went to war – a vast mobilization that employed every able-bodied adult American, and put money in their pockets. And after the war, the GI Bill, sending millions of returning veterans to college. A vast expansion of public higher education. And huge infrastructure investments, such as the National Defense Highway Act. Taxes on the rich remained at least 70 percent until 1981."

Pollution, Poverty and People of Color: Children at Risk  6/6/2012 Scientific American: "It’s long been known that children in poorer neighborhoods like Ford’s are more likely to be exposed to lead, industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust and other contaminants. Now, scientists are beginning to suspect that low-income children aren’t just more exposed – they actually may be more biologically susceptible to them, even at low levels. A growing body of research suggests that the chronic stressors of poverty may fundamentally alter the way the body reacts to pollutants, especially in young children. Several studies have found that such stress may exacerbate the effects of lead on children’s developing brains, while others reported more asthma symptoms in kids with simultaneous exposure to air pollution and socioeconomic problems."

As Sowell observes,”What the authorities and the media seem determined to suppress is that the hoodlum elements in many ghettoes launch coordinated attacks on whites in public places.” Apparently, in the conservative imagination there is a nationwide plot and a scheme to silence white pain and anger as they are made the targets of systematic, brutal, anti-white racism."

How the Corporate Media Obscure the Truth About Mitt Romney's 'Vulture Capitalism' at Bain  6/3/2012 Alternet: "Here's how the deal works. The leveraged buy-out firm will put down a fraction of the cost of buying an ailing company. The balance of the transaction is borrowed, but the debt goes onto the books of the target company, not the private equity firm – the struggling company basically finances the lion's share of its own sale. The target company's debt payments then increase significantly, and that debt service is written off, reducing its tax burden a great deal. This subsidy increases short-term revenues (at the expense of long-term debt) and that, in turn, is paid out to the firm's investors along with a fat stream of management fees that Romney and his partners skimmed off the top."

Cherokee freedmen controversy  5/29/2012 Wikipedia: "The Cherokee Freedmen Controversy is an ongoing political and tribal dispute between the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and descendants of the Cherokee Freedmen regarding tribal citizenship. During the American Civil War, the Cherokee who supported the Union abolished the practice of African slavery by act of the Cherokee National Council in 1863. The Cherokee Freedmen became citizens of the Cherokee Nation in accordance with a treaty made with the United States government a year after the Civil War ended. In the early 1980s, the Cherokee Nation administration amended citizenship rules to require direct descent from an ancestor listed in the "Cherokee By Blood" section of the Dawes Rolls. The change stripped descendants of the Cherokee Freedmen of citizenship and voting rights unless they satisfied this new criterion."

He has received some expert advice on Indians from none other than the political and cultural genius of LaDonna Harris. No one can argue with the fact a tribe has the right to determine who is an Indian. If the Comanche Nation wishes to adopt a space alien, it would not be in any tribe’s interest to criticize. Anti-intellectualism is taking over the US  5/18/2012 Guardian: "After the Chronicle of Higher Education published an item highlighting the dissertations of five young PhD candidates in African-American studies at Northwestern University, Chronicle blogger Naomi Schaefer Riley wrote that the mere titles of the dissertations were sufficient cause to eliminate all black studies classes. Riley hadn't read the dissertations; they're not even published yet. When questioned about this, she argued that as "a journalist… it is not my job to read entire dissertations before I write a 500-word piece about them," adding: "there are not enough hours in the day or money in the world to get me to read a dissertation on historical black midwifery." Riley tried to justify her view with a cliched, culture-wars-style plaint about the humanities and higher education: "Such is the state of academic research these days…. The publication topics become more and more irrelevant and partisan. No one reads them." This is not mere arrogance; it is the same cocooned "white ghetto" narrow-mindedness that allows someone like Michael Hicks to be in charge of a major American school system yet not know "Rosa Clark's" correct name."

GOP TO BLAME FOR FLORIDA'S PUBLIC SCHOOL FAILURE  5/18/2012 Florida Democratic Party: "As the Florida Department of Education prepares to release FCAT scores to schools today, Floridians should place the blame for our failing public schools squarely at the feet of Governor Rick Scott and the Republican controlled legislature in Tallahassee which has led a multi-year assault on Florida's education system and failed Florida's children. "The problem isn't our public schools or our children — the problem is that the Republican Party has demonstrated a complete inability to run Florida’s public education system," said Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith. "Over the last decade, Republicans have railed against public schools, consistently underfunded them, required our teachers to teach to an ever-changing test and then feigned surprise when our students performed poorly. If you’re looking for the reason why Florida’s children continue to fall further and further behind the rest of this country, look no further than Tallahassee and the failed educational policies of every Republican administration."

This occurred in direct violation of the Constitution, specifically double jeopardy laws which make it illegal to charge someone with the same or similar crime after an acquittal or conviction. According to a Huffington Post article, the jury found Morgan guilty of attempted murder. However, Morgan’s van was destroyed before conducting forensic analysis, Morgan was never tested for gun shot residue and the bullet-proof vest worn by one of the officers who allegedly took a bullet was never produced for the jury."

The eighth graders in her journalism class were putting the final touches on the school yearbook when they asked if they could write an article about Martin. She allowed it. Then they asked if they could hold a fundraiser in his honor. The kids had a simple idea: On a dress-down day, anyone who wanted to wear a hoodie -- what Martin was wearing when he was shot -- to school would donate a dollar. That needed approval from a higher authority, so Harris and another school staffer took the idea to the school's principal, who approved the fundraiser. But superintendent Cassell nixed the idea."

Further, they were determined to run Robinson out of Sanford one way or another. Some of those White members of the community met with the mayor of Sanford and demanded Robinson be forced out of town. As a result, Sanford city officials informed the Royals, Black and White ballplayers would not be allowed on the same playing field together. But, according to Mr. Lacy, Robinson, the future Hall-of-Famer was undeterred by the hostile throng gathered at the stadium. The two drove to the back of the ballpark and entered the field through a plank in the outfield fence."

Global Extinction within one Human Lifetime as a Result of a Spreading Atmospheric Arctic Methane Heat wave and Surface Firestorm  3/6/2012 Arctic News: "Although the sudden high rate Arctic methane increase at Svalbard in late 2010 data set applies to only a short time interval, similar sudden methane concentration peaks also occur at Barrow point and the effects of a major methane build-up has been observed using all the major scientific observation systems. Giant fountains/torches/plumes of methane entering the atmosphere up to 1 km across have been seen on the East Siberian Shelf. This methane eruption data is so consistent and aerially extensive that when combined with methane gas warming potentials, Permian extinction event temperatures and methane lifetime data it paints a frightening picture of the beginning of the now uncontrollable global warming induced destabilization of the subsea Arctic methane hydrates on the shelf and slope which started in late 2010. This process of methane release will accelerate exponentially, release huge quantities of methane into the atmosphere and lead to the demise of all life on earth before the middle of this century."

In fact, right-wing politicians are attempting to roll back reproductive rights across the nation. One year ago, we reported on a number of state-level reproductive rights battles. Today we check in with many of those states (plus some new ones), only to find that the war on women has not let up at all and abortion bans being introduced to legislatures are getting more scary, more intrusive, more punitive and in some cases, gaining more traction. This brutal combined assault on family planning and abortion rights, if it continues to be successful, will hit disadvantaged women the hardest, and result in an environment of compulsory pregnancy for many of the nation's women."

"Red Tails," a movie about them, made a respectable $19 million or so at the box office this weekend."

Israeli Lobby launch new Super PAC effort to bring down Ron Paul  1/21/2012 Global Research: "Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate who is not overtly ‘pro-Israel’ in the popular neoconservative sense. On January 13, in the run-up to the pivotal South Carolina GOP primary, the Emergency Committee for Israel, run by neoconservative thinker William Kristol, released an ad in which its Director Gary Bauer makes a plea to voters – not endorsing any candidate, rather, telling conservatives that they must reject Congressman Ron Paul as their GOP candidate, deriding his foreign policy views with respect to America’s ‘special relationship’ with Israel, and fighting the War on Terror – concluding that, “We can do better than Ron Paul”."

Charmaine Fuller Cooper  1/18/2012 IndyWeek: "When Charmaine Fuller Cooper opens the files on her desk, the words she finds inside sear like a slap across the face. Promiscuous. Unattractive. Imbecile. She imagines how the people whose names are printed on these medical records would feel if they read what others thought of them. For decades, doctors, teachers and social workers in North Carolina used the derogatory descriptors as justifications to strip the victims of their ability to have children, with the ultimate goal of ridding the human race of the undesirable. By the time the state's eugenics program ended in 1974, an estimated 7,600 women and men had been forcibly sterilized."

Allen Counter, a professor of neurophysiology and neurology at Harvard Medical School questioned why it was mostly women who were dealing with increased rates of mercury poisoning in places like Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and even in the Southwestern United States In every case, clinical questioning revealed that the women had used skin-whitening creams — many for years. In other words, these women had tried so desperately to whiten their skin color that they had poisoned their bodies by applying mercury-based "beauty creams."

'This is 21st Century racism and apartheid': Cherokee Indian tribe expels all slave descendants  8/25/2011 Daily Mail: "The nation's second-largest Indian tribe formally booted from membership thousands of descendants of black slaves who were brought to Oklahoma more than 170 years ago by Native American owners. The Cherokee nation voted after the Civil War to admit the slave descendants to the tribe. But on Monday, the tribe's Supreme Court ruled that a 2007 tribal decision to kick the so-called 'Freedmen' out of the tribe could be upheld."

About the Koch Brothers  8/18/2011 Common Cause: "Common Cause has raised questions about the Kochs’ ties to Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, who according to Koch Industries have been “featured” guests at twice-annual political fundraising and strategy sessions sponsored by the company. In late January, we sponsored a public forum, “Uncloaking the Kochs” in conjunction with one of the Koch meetings in Southern California to spotlight their pursuit of an agenda that advances their private interests at the expense of the public interest. Common Cause also has asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether Justices Scalia and Thomas have participated in Koch-sponsored events and if so whether their participation should have triggered their recusal when the court considered the landmark campaign finance case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Koch Industries was a major beneficiary of the court’s decision in that case, which overturned longstanding regulations limiting corporate spending around elections."

Superior Court, heard the 1991 legal case by neo-Confederates seeking control of the Confederate Memorial Association that Hurley led for years. As director of the Memorial, Hurley fought the takeover in fear that racists from Southern states would use the now-closed museum’s building, prestige and relics to foster a nationwide political movement with hidden agendas. Fully 60 percent of whites nationwide backed Republican candidates for the House of Representatives; only 37 percent supported Democrats, according to the National Election Poll exit poll conducted by Edison Research. Not even in Republicans’ 1994 congressional landslide did they win that high a percentage of the white vote. Moreover, those results may understate the extent of the white flight from the Democratic Party, according to a National Journal analysis of previously unpublished exit-poll data provided by Edison Research."

In an administration that feels that some racial issues are a third rail for an African-American president, this has not happened. Obama’s big education speech this summer to the Urban League made no mention of school resegregation. He talked plenty about his Race to the Top contest to fight the achievement gap, but racial desegregation is not part of that fight. Children of color continue to be exposed to disproportionate disadvantages that make the gap almost impossible to close. Until Obama publically connects the two, consider the issue “unaddressed.’’

New Tests Show Key Witnesses Lied at Abu Jamal Trial  9/20/2010 Counterpunch: "During the contentious 1982 murder trial of Philadelphia radio-journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal, a central argument of the prosecution in making its case for the conviction and for imposition of a death penalty was the trial testimony of two key eyewitnesses who claimed to have actually seen Abu-Jamal fire his pistol repeatedly, at virtually point-blank range, into the prone Officer Daniel Faulkner. This testimony about Abu-Jamal’s shooting at the defenseless policeman execution-style solidified the prosecution’s portrayal of Abu-Jamal as a cold-blooded assassin. There was however, always the lingering question, never raised at trial, or even during the subsequent nearly three-decades-long appeals process, of why, if Abu-Jamal had fired four bullets downward at Faulkner, only hitting him once with a bullet between the eyes on the morning of December 9, 1981, there was no evidence in the surface of the sidewalk around the officer’s body of the bullets that missed."

Clinton in Haiti - Haiti's Colonial Overlord  8/5/2010 Counterpunch: "Ordinary Haitians have a different view. They remember Clinton as the man who, while president, demanded Haiti follow the "Plan of Death"--the neoliberal prescriptions of the IMF and World Bank that "structurally adjusted" the Haitian economy in the interests of U.S. business, at the expense of the country's peasants and poor. Today, Haitians know Clinton as a man who wields immense power over the country's future. Esquire's description of him as the "CEO of a leaderless nation." can only be called a political Freudian slip--a CEO, after all, is concerned with profitable investments for shareholders, not meeting people's needs."

Philly Knows Better - Another Reverse Racism Scam  7/28/2010 Counterpunch: "The usual suspects – right-wing operatives, conservative media commentators and GOP Congressmen – are portraying two members of the New Black Panther Party, including of one carrying a baton, as having intimidated white voters during the November 4, 2008 presidential election where Obama defeated GOP candidate McCain. A closer examination by ThisCantBeHappening! however reveals that, just like the doctored video that falsely implied that USDA official Shirley Sherrod was a racist who had denied farm aid to poor whites, this Philly claim of alleged black intimidation of white voters is just more trumped-up nonsense."

Government Allows BP to Dump Oil-Spill Waste on Black Communities  7/22/2010 OpEd News: "Given the sad history of waste disposal in the southern United States, it should be no surprise to anyone that the BP waste disposal plan looks a lot like "Dumping in Dixie," and has become a core environmental justice concern , especially among low-income and people of color communities in the Gulf Coast--communities whose residents have historically borne more than their fair share of solid waste landfills and hazardous waste facilities before and after natural and man-made disasters. For decades, African American and Latino communities in the South became the dumping grounds for all kind of wastes--making them "sacrifice zones." Nowhere is this scenario more apparent than in Louisiana's "Cancer Alley," the 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi from Baton Rough to New Orleans. Gulf Coast residents, who have for decades lived on the fenceline with landfills and waste sites, are asking why their communities are being asked again to shoulder the waste disposal burden for the giant BP oil spill. They are demanding answers from BP and the EPA in Washington, DC and the EPA Region 4 office in Atlanta and EPA Region 6 office in Dallas--two EPA regions that have a legacy of unequal protection, racial discrimination, and bad decisions that have exacerbated environmental and health disparities."

What the Tea Party Really Stands For  7/21/2010 Black Voice News: by Al Sharpton

Right Tries to Bloc NAACP Criticism of Tea Party Racism  7/21/2010 Black Voice News: "What surprised me was the opposition of Cynthia Tucker, African-American editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who wrote that the NAACP had no business condemning the Tea Party. Her view was: 1) she did not know what “elements” of racism were; 2) this would confirm that the NAACP was an arm of the Democratic Party; 3) the NAACP did not purge its own ranks; and 4) the resolution just draws attention to the Tea Partiers. This is very weak stuff for the editor of a major American newspaper, especially coming an African American."

Why'd the NAACP Resolution Cause Such a Stir?  7/19/2010 Black America Web: "The knee-jerk response, which has been in overdrive on this matter, has led some prominent supporters to take umbrage at the suggestion that the movement, itself, is racist. But cooler heads know that the NAACP resolution does not really suggest that. By definition, the NAACP’s appeal for a denunciation of racist behavior within the TPM suggests that there are people within the movement who can authentically decry bigotry and racism – in other words, non-bigots and non-racists."

More Than Just a Few Bad Apples - Days of Cop Violence in New Orleans  7/16/2010 Counterpunch: "While the details of their charges are shocking, much of the media has missed the real story: corruption and violence are endemic to the NOPD, and wider systemic change is needed not just in police personnel, but in the city's overall criminal justice system… A coalition of criminal justice activists called Community United for Change (CUC) has asked for federal investigations of dozens of other police murders committed over the past three decades, which advocates say have never been properly examined. Activists named a wide range of cases, from the death of 25-year-old Jenard Thomas, who was shot by police in front of his father on March 24, 2005; to Sherry Singleton, shot by police in 1980 while she was naked in a bathtub, in front of her four year old child."

Yes, There Is Racism in the Tea Party  7/16/2010 Alternet: "As NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous said, "We're simply asking them to repudiate racist acts and bigotry in their ranks or accept responsibility." But instead of acknowledging and disassociating themselves from the more radical actions of their membership, Tea Party leaders have said that racist elements are non existent. In hurling accusations of racism back at the NAACP, Tea Party leaders have wielded a professed desire for colorblindness as a whitewashing tool. But Tea Party members are employing a defense that only perpetuates the racism they are desperately trying to refute."

The former Alaska governor said claims that tea party activists "judge people by the color of their skin" were false and appalling."

The New Racism: History and the Tea Party, Part 1  7/3/2010 Global Comments: "While most Tea Party leaders dismiss the extreme racist rhetoric and signs as a few whackos, they certainly embrace what I call the New Racism. By this I mean the subtle shift in language necessitated by the Civil Rights Movement that the Right employs today to defend white privilege without resorting to overt racism. Historian Kevin Kruse, in his excellent book on white resistance to civil rights, White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism, demonstrates that as traditional racism increasingly became unacceptable in American political discourse, Atlanta whites began using code words to express racist sentiments in ways that would attract larger numbers of voters made nervous by civil rights. Terms like “law and order,” “property values” and “individual rights” become synonymous with unofficial segregation and anti-black attitudes."

The Tea Party: A phony grassroots movement headed for political oblivion?  6/11/2010 Capitol Hill Blues: "The backlash is inevitable. The Tea Party is not — and never has been — the “grassroots” movement that is claims. It was born out of a sham grassroots organization created in the office of a Republican consultant for a millionaire GOP client and then nurtured into existance by former Republican Congressman Dick Armey of Texas."

Tea Party-Backed Rand Paul Blasted for Comments  5/24/2010 Black America Web: "Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul was blasted by Democrats and GOP officials Sunday for his comments that the federal government, through the Civil Rights Act, has no right to tell private businesses that they can’t discriminate. The Sunday morning network news shows resembled a Rand Paul barbecue, with liberal Democrats and even the most conservative Republicans roasting Paul for his civil rights comments and other remarks he’s made since defeating a GOP establishment-backed candidate in last Tuesday’s Kentucky primary."

Secrets of the Tea Party - The troubling history of Tea Party leader Dick Armey  5/21/2010 In These Times: "Only one month before that populist moment on Capitol Hill, Armey was employed as a lobbyist by leading international “consulting firm” DLA Piper. In that capacity, from 2005 to 2009, Armey promoted the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, otherwise known as Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), which the State Department has branded a terrorist group. Armey lobbied his former colleagues on behalf of legislation that would have provided taxpayer support to the MEK… Armey hasn’t been alone in his support of MEK. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) led a concerted effort during the Bush administration to have the State Department remove MEK from its list of terrorist organizations. Ironically, given his support of a socialist group, Tancredo delivered an acerbic opening address at the National Tea Party Convention. “People who could not even spell the word ‘vote,’ or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House,” he said. “His name is Barack Hussein Obama.”

The Roots of Stalin in the Tea Party Movement  4/17/2010 Alternet: "The secretive oil billionaires of the Koch family, the main supporters of the right-wing groups that orchestrated the Tea Party movement, would not have the means to bankroll their favorite causes had it not been for the pile of money the family made working for the Bolsheviks in the late 1920s and early 1930s, building refineries, training Communist engineers and laying down the foundation of Soviet oil infrastructure."

Spontaneous Uprising? Corporate Lobbyists Helping To Orchestrate Radical Anti-Obama Tea Party Protests  4/9/2010 ThinkProgress: "Despite these attempts to make the “movement” appear organic, the principle organizers of the local events are actually the lobbyist-run think tanks Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works. The two groups are heavily staffed and well funded, and are providing all the logistical and public relations work necessary for planning coast-to-coast protests."

Tea Partiers Assail Black Leaders in D.C.  3/22/2010 Black America Web: "The battle over the Democratic health care bill turned ugly over the weekend when Tea Party protesters called Georgia Congressman and civil rights legend John Lewis the N-word and spit at Rep. Emanuel Cleaver near the Capitol. The angry demonstrators also took their wrath out on Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), one of three openly gay members of Congress, taunting him with a gay slur. U.S. Capitol Police arrested the demonstrator who allegedly spat at Cleaver, who, like Lewis, is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus."

Dick Armey's 'tea party' history is a strange brew  3/16/2010 WaPo:  "As head of FreedomWorks, the group that helps to fund and coordinate tea party activists, Armey went to the National Press Club on Monday afternoon in advance of Tuesday's tea party protest in Washington, to present some of his historical findings. "Jamestown colony, when it was first founded as a socialist venture, dang near failed with everybody dead and dying in the snow," Armey reported in his luncheon address."

How Sports Attacks Public Education  3/5/2010 The Nation: "At the University of Maryland, as tuition has been hiked and classes cut, football coach Ralph Friedgen makes a base salary of 1.75 million bucks, which would be outrageous even if the team weren't two-steps past terrible. Friedgen also gets perks like a $50,000 bonus if none of his players are arrested during the course of the season. Ground zero of the student protest movement is the University of California at Berkeley. Over at Berkeley, students are facing 32% tuition hikes, while the school pays football coach Jeff Tedford 2.8 million dollars a year and is finishing more than 400 million in renovations on the football stadium. This is what students see: boosters and alumni come first, while they've been instructed to cheer their teams, pay their loans, and mind their business."

Tavis Smiley Ends State of Black American Union Show, Continues Media Lockdown of Obama's Black Left Critics  1/13/2010 Black Agenda Report: "Tavis Smiley announced on January 6 that the annual State of the Black Union event, held in early February for the last ten years, will not be held this year. His public reasons are vague and unconvincing. The real deal is that corporate media, the Democratic party and the Obama administration cannot tolerate the emergence of public leftward pressure from Black America. So the black conversation that SOBU showcased over the last decade must be silenced."
