"Make Every Vote Count" Mission Statement

WETV is currently in pre-production for its first documentary film, "Making Every Vote Count."

This film examines the urban legend that African Americans will lose the right to vote in 2007. This film will explore poor voter turnout in the past two elections (2000/2002), voter disenfranchisement, lack of education and outreach to African American voters 17-35 and how their communities are affected. The documentary will take a look at the civil rights movement, the history of African American voting rights and the education on hifh school and college levels about the voting process. For example, why is voter registration and turnout lower in the 17-35 age group? It will also look at whether our schools are providing adequate information, if high schools and colleges should be more active in voter registration, and what can be done to improve participation on the democratic process for African Americans in general.

There will be special focus on African American turnout in primary elections and why it is important to the process. It will look at how African Americans will benefit from greater voter participation as well as increased participation as delegates to the national conventions.

This non-partisan project is designed to increase African American awareness on voting issues, and increase voter registration and turnout in future elections. The use of the urban legend is designed to shock the audience, "What if by not using the right to vote, African Americans lose the right to vote?", while disproving the legend at the same time.

Worldwide Educational Television, Inc. supports the documentary through the Black Voter Network website. This site has a very comprehensive listing of African American newspapers nationwide. It is a reference point for news, articles, and information about voting rights for African Americans -a no-nonsense site filled with educational materials and hot links to other sites and organizations involved with getting out the black vote.

WETV, Inc. is currently researching and writing companion educational study guides for "Making Every Vote Count" which will be available to school districts and school libraries. The guide encourages high school students to explore their right to vote and hopefully encourages higher voter registration in the future.
